Generals Field Hockey Pushes Past Red Hawks, 3–1, on the Road

MONTCLAIR, N.J. — In the third all-time matchup, Washington and Lee University field hockey team earned a 3–1 road win over Montclair State on Sunday afternoon in non-conference play. Washington and Lee (5–3) tallied twice in the opening quarter and built a 3–0 lead before the Red Hawks (2–7) netted their lone goal in the final minute.

The Generals struck first at 1:09 when Margaret Scheurer fired a reverse chip shot from five meters out in the center of the circle for her third goal of the season. W&L doubled the lead midway through the first quarter at 6:16, as first-year Madeline Lancione cleaned up a rebound on the left post after Scheurer's initial attempt was saved. Betty Boatwright extended the margin to 3–0 at 22:46, finishing from the right side of the cage after a series of persistent chances in front of the Red Hawks' keeper.

Montclair broke through with 12 seconds left in regulation when Emma Bianco scored off a penalty corner, but the Generals' defense, anchored by senior goalkeeper Julia McDonald, limited the Red Hawks to just four shots on goal. McDonald recorded two saves, while Montclair's Sydney White kept the contest close with nine saves.
