Field Hockey Reels In Marlins, 4–1, in ODAC Opener

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Washington and Lee University field hockey team opened Old Dominion Athletic Conference play with a 4–1 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field. Washington and Lee (6–3, 1–0 ODAC) scored four unanswered goals to seize control and secure its third straight victory, while the Marlins (3–5, 0–1 ODAC) managed just four total shots.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Generals broke through midway through the second when Zoe Dolfis finished off a penalty-corner insert from Margaret Scheurer at 21:47. Less than four minutes later, Scheurer doubled the lead with an unassisted strike, pushing W&L ahead 2–0 at halftime.

Virginia Wesleyan briefly closed the gap with a goal from Lauren Kite at 34:29, but Washington and Lee responded with back-to-back scores to seal the win. Sydney Baggett extended the lead to 3–1 at 37:38, and Scheurer added her second of the afternoon just four minutes later at 41:46. The senior midfielder has now scored in four of the last five contests.

The Generals dominated possession and attacking opportunities, outshooting the Marlins 20–4 and earning a commanding 17–1 advantage in penalty corners. Goalkeeper Julia McDonald earned the win, while VWU's DJ Holsclaw tallied six saves on ten shots on goal.
