Right on the Spot, Tan’s Penalty Stroke Seals OT Victory for W&L Field Hockey

LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior Amanda Tan converted a penalty stroke with 2:22 left in the first overtime period to secure a 4–3 victory for the Washington and Lee University field hockey team over 14th-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (4–2) avenged a 2024 road loss to the Diplomats (6–1) and earned their highest-ranked win since defeating No. 14 Shenandoah University, 5–2, on October 26, 2022. W&L has also claimed ranked victories over No. 19 Lynchburg in the 2022 ODAC Championship and No. 24 Stevens in 2024.

With the score tied 3–3 after regulation, Margaret Cover drove into the circle on a 1-on-1 breakaway before being taken down by the F&M goalkeeper, resulting in the awarded penalty. Tan stepped up and calmly placed her shot into the lower left corner to deliver the walk-off win.

Washington and Lee opened the scoring at 7:51 off of a penalty corner when Zoe Dolfis redirected a feed from Sydney Baggett. F&M responded with three straight goals — one in each of the first three quarters — from Sophia Sarbanes, Hannah Fitzgerald, and Megan Dadio to build a 3–1 lead.

The Generals stormed back in the fourth quarter, starting with Sydney Baggett's goal at 52:13. Off a setup from Amanda Brickner outside the circle, the senior forward turned, held off a defender, and lifted her shot into the top-left corner.

Just over a minute later at 53:18, rookie Madeline Lancione provided the equalizer. The first-year capitalized on a loose ball after a W&L foul, weaving through three defenders before drawing the goalkeeper out of position and finishing inside the near post.

From there, the defense and goalkeeper Julia McDonald (10 saves) held strong to force overtime, setting the stage for Tan's heroics.
