FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Senior forward
Betty Boatwright scored three goals to lead the Washington and Lee University field hockey team to a 4–1 road victory over Mary Washington in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night.
Washington and Lee (3–2) erased an early deficit and controlled the final three quarters with four unanswered scores, while the Eagles (2–3) were shut out after the opening seven minutes.
UMW struck first at 6:55 when Mackenzie Proffitt scored off a setup from Lauren Boucher. The Generals quickly responded less than two minutes later, as Boatwright scored her first of the night at 8:24 on a penalty corner, assisted by
Sydney Baggett.
W&L took the lead for good at 19:40 when Baggett tallied a goal of her own, off an assist from
Charlotte Dreany. Boatwright extended the margin to 3–1 at 24:31 off a feed from
Margaret Cover from the top of the circle. Boatwright drew the keeper out of position and took advantage of an empty night. The senior co-captain completed the hat trick in the fourth quarter at 49:30 by redirecting a Baggett shot off a corner insert over the top of the head of the UMW backline for the final tally of the evening.
Goalkeeper
Julia McDonald anchored the Generals' defense with seven saves, while W&L capitalized on its offensive opportunities with eight shots on goal to post the highest scoring total of the season.
