No. 6 Volleyball Downs Randolph in Straight Sets

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The sixth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team moved to 2-0 in Old Dominon Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Friday night as they defeated Randolph College in straight sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED (W&L 3-0, 25-20 25-14, 25-23)
  • Both teams traded points early in the first set until Randolph (4-8, 0-3 ODAC) used a 4-1 run to take a 7–5 lead. A WildCats service error kickstarted a 6-3 Generals (11-0, 2-0 ODAC) run, highlighted by three Riley Debiec kills, to push W&L ahead 11-10. The teams then exchanged back-to-back 5-1 runs, with the Blue and White holding onto a narrow lead thanks to kills from Katie Stone (2) and Cara Hamil (1). The Generals closed out the frame with an 8-2 stretch, featuring four more Debiec kills along with one each from Addi Johnson and Hamil, to secure the 25-20 win.
  • In the second set, Randolph scored first before the Generals responded with an 8–1 run to build a six-point advantage. The surge included kills from Reese Gilla, Johnson, Hamil, Emery Goerig, Debiec, and K. Stone. The teams traded points for much of the remainder of the set until Randolph cut the lead to 23-14 on a Kelsey Bowler kill and a Kailee Turner ace. W&L closed the set on back-to-back points, with a Schellenberg kill and a Randolph error sealing a 25-14 victory.
  • Randolph opened the third set with a 2-1 lead after a Caroline Towle kill, but W&L answered with eight straight points for a 9-2 cushion. The run featured two Sienna Nichoson aces plus kills from Goerig and K. Stone. The WildCats countered with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to two and later surged ahead 16–15 after three straight kills and a Generals error. W&L regained control with a 4-1 stretch fueled by two Debiec kills and a Johnson ace, but Randolph briefly reclaimed a 21-20 lead behind a Turner/Finnerty block, a service ace, and a Bowler kill. The Generals finished strong, closing on a 5-2 run with three Hamil kills and one from Debiec, securing a 25-23 win and a 3-0 sweep.
