Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 13 Women's Soccer edged in final minutes by Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The 13th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team was edged by a 1-0 score on Sunday afternoon on an 89th-minute goal from the Swarthmore Garnet.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The lone goal of the game came with just 1:46 left in regulation on a score from Swarthmore's (2-0) Celia Kanellakos. Lauren Lior held the ball at the top of the 18 before flicking a pass through the defense, where Kanellakos slipped in behind and scored inside the left post.
  • After being outshot, 8-6, in the first half, the Garnet put 7-of-11 shot attempts on goal in the second half to keep W&L (1-1) goalkeeper Kate McEnroe busy. McEnroe came up with six saves in the second half.
  • W&L senior Helen Otteni was responsible for both of her side's shots on goal in the second half. She forced Swarthmore keeper Dahlia Bedward to make saves in the 52nd and 84th minutes.

TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Otteni finished the game as W&L's leader in total shots (4) and shots on goal (3). Senior Sydney Devory took two shots and put both on target, as well, while junior Emily Burke, senior Sarah Zimmerman and sophomore Elizabeth Zimmerman all shot twice each.
  • Kanellakos tallied a game-high six shots and put four on goal, with Lior totaling five shots and one assist. Those two players combined for 11 of Swarthmore's 17 total goal attempts.
  • Both starting keepers played all 90 minutes on Sunday. McEnroe made a career-high eight saves for the Generals, while Bedward recorded six saves to claim the clean sheet.

TEAM STATS:
  • The Garnet came out on top in total shots on the day by a 17-14 final. They also managed nine shots on goal to six for the Blue and White.
  • W&L limited the Garnet to just one corner kick, which came in the first half. The Blue and White earned four corners in the first half and two in the second.
