INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Former Washington and Lee University men's track and field student-athlete, Zach Moore '24, was selected as a recipient of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Winter  Postgraduate Scholarship, the organization announced last week.

Zach is 29th student-athlete in Washington and Lee history to earn the prestigious honor. He is the second W&L student-athlete in 2025 to receive the award, joining Cassie Carr of women's cross country and track and field, who was announced as a recipient of the scholarship in the fall. Since 1970, W&L has had 47 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients.

"Being awarded this scholarship is simply a testament to all the support I received during my time as a student-athlete. I am so thankful to the athletic and academic mentors I had during my time at W&L who helped me to make the most of my years as an undergraduate," said Moore. "The lessons I learned as a student-athlete will undoubtedly make me a better engineer and teammate during this next chapter in my life and for years to come."

An integrated engineering major and co-valedictorian of his class, Zach was named the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year three times and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He was a 2024 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District selection and earned W&L Scholar-Athlete, Academic All-ODAC, and President's List honors every year during his time in Lexington.

Moore is currently pursuing a Masters of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering at the Duke University Pratt School of Engineering. At Duke, he is expanding his technical expertise while exploring applications of automation and robotic systems in surgery and other human-centric technologies. This summer, he will serve as a mechanical engineering intern at General Dynamics Mission Systems. Upon completing his graduate degree, Moore plans to design and implement autonomous technologies to enhance manufacturing and operational efficiency.

As a student-athlete, Moore was a three-time All-ODAC honoree for the Generals' track and field program. He earned a pair of Third Team All-ODAC selections in the 800m and was a Second Team All-ODAC member in the distance medley relay in 2023. Moore ranks third all-time in the program's indoor top-five list in the 800m, posting a personal-best time of 1:56.73 during his senior season. His efforts also earned him All-Region honors in the distance medley relay.

"Congratulations to Zach for earning the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Zach is one of the best students we've ever had as part of the W&L men's track and field team. He truly represented what being a student-athlete is all about during his time at W&L. We are very thankful for everything he gave to our program on and off the track" said Norris T. Aldridge Men's Track & Field Head Coach Brandon Uhl.

The NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships annually, 63 for men and 63 for women. Scholarships are awarded to recently graduated student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically in intercollegiate athletics competition.

The one-time grants of $10,000 each are awarded for fall sports, winter sports and spring sports. Each sports season (fall, winter, spring), there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships for women.
