Women's Track & Field Leads After Day One, Records Three Wins

HARRISONBURG ,Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's track and field team secured three wins on the first day of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Outdoor Championships in Harrisonburg.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET
  • The Generals are sitting in first place with 72 points through six events, scoring ten or more points in each event on Friday. Lynchburg sits in second with 49 points, with Bridgewater and Virginia Wesleyan tied for third place with 28 points, while Roanoke rounds out the top five with 20 points.
  • Due to a rain delay following the men's 100m prelims, the 200m and 400m hurdles were postponed. Three heats of the 400m hurdles are set to start at 4:15 p.m., with four heats of the 200m scheduled to start at approximately 4:30 p.m.
  • Camille Gillum kicked off the first day of action with her first outdoor conference title, securing a first-place finish in the high jump. Gillum won her third overall ODAC title on Friday afternoon, clearing a personal-best height of 1.68m (5'-06.00"), which also ranks ninth in Division III. Simone Kasischke turned in a fifth-place finish in the event after soaring over a height of 1.52m (4'-11.75").
  • Bailey Hedgemon defended her hammer throw crown by recording a mark of 46.51m (152'-07.00"), becoming the first student-athlete in program history to win back-to-back hammer throw titles.
  • Emily Jackson broke the second program record of the day after recording a new personal-best mark of 11.88m (38'-11.75") to finish second in the event. Bailey Hedgemon finished two spots behind Jackson in fourth, registering a season-best mark of 11.39m (37'-04.50"), while Katie Wood rounded out the scorers with a sixth-place finish, recording a toss of 11.05m (36'-03.00"), the eighth-best mark in program history.
  • Reese Brown and Brianna Breyault both competed in the 3,000m steeplechase this afternoon, battling until the very end, where they finished first and second, respectively. Brown edged out Breyault for the ODAC title, clocking in a time of 11:24.50—the third-fastest time in program history—to become the first General to win the 3k steeplechase title since Lauren Schultz in 2013. Breyault crossed the finish line in 11:24.52—the fourth-fastest time in program history—to finish right behind Brown in second.
  • Amanda Romano posted the second-fastest time in the 100m hurdles prelims to qualify for tomorrow's finals, crossing the finish line in 14.91s. Annabelle Sutliff clocked a new personal best and the fifth-fastest time in program history to secure her spot in tomorrow's 400m finals.
  • Lilly Versen and Ashley D'Ambrosia qualified for tomorrow's 100m dash finals after clocking top-five times in the event. Versen led the 22-person field with a time of 12.38s, while D'Ambrosia clocked in at 12.60s.
  • The Blue and White had three scorers in the 10,000m, with Emma Mitchell and Claire Hamlet finishing back-to-back in second and third place, respectively. Mitchell clocked the fifth-fastest time in program history, crossing the finish line in 37:33.98, while Hamlet posted the ninth-fastest time in program history, clocking in at 38:17.34. Kristen Clodgo rounded out the trio with an eighth-place finish, crossing the finish line in 40:00.44.

  • Camille Gillum reset her own program record once again in the high jump, setting a new personal-best mark of 1.68m (5'-06.00") to secure her third overall title and first outdoor title of her career. Her mark now sits ninth in Division III while tying the top mark in the South Region with Marin Simmons of Southern Virginia University.
  • Emily Jackson broke the program's shot put record on her way to a second-place finish on Friday, recording a personal-best toss of 11.88m (38'-11.75"). Her mark surpassed Olivia Berntson's previous record of 38'-07.50", which was set last season.
  • Reese Brown moved up to No. 3 all-time in the program's 3,000m steeplechase record books after clocking a personal-best time of 11:24.50 to win the event for the first time in her career. Her time moved her past Lauren Schultz's mark of 11:28.00, which was set in 2013.
  • Brianna Breyault improved her No. 4 all-time ranking after clocking a new personal-best time of 11:24.52 in the 3,000m steeplechase, helping her finish in second place. Her time also surpassed Lauren Schultz's performance from the 2013 season.
  • Katie Wood moved to No. 8 all-time in the program's shot put record books after recording a toss of 11.05m (36'-03.00") to finish in sixth place. Her mark surpassed Stacy Doornbos' mark of 35'-10.00", which was set in 2008.
  • Annabelle Sutliff moved up to No. 5 in the program's 400m record books after crossing the finish line in a personal-best time of 59.70s to qualify for tomorrow's finals. Her time surpassed Kara Farroni's mark of 59.96s, which was set in 2015.
  • Emma Mitchell moved to No. 5 all-time in the program's 10,000m record books after clocking a personal-best time of 37:33.98. She surpassed Lauren Schultz's time of 37:42.26, which was set in 2012.
  • Claire Hamlet posted the ninth-fastest time in program history in the 10k after crossing the finish line in a personal-best time of 38:17.34. Hamlet's mark moved her past Jessica Shaw's time of 38:28.39, which was set in 2009.
