LEXINGTON, Va. - Washington and Lee University Athletics mourns the passing of David Redmond '66, '69L, a revered Hall of Fame athlete and devoted alumnus, who passed away on February 26, 2025, in Richmond, Va. Born on May 12, 1944, in Hartford, Conn., David's legacy at W&L is one of leadership, athletic excellence, and lifelong service.

A four-year letter-winner and senior-year team captain for the men's soccer team, Redmond made an immediate impact on the Generals' program. In his freshman year, the team improved from a 3-8 record the previous season to a 7-4-2 mark. Over his four-year career, the team compiled an impressive 30-15-5 overall record. David was W&L's first-ever two-time All-South Region selection and earned First Team All-State honors during his final two seasons. His stellar defensive play was recognized in 1964 when he was named Outstanding Defensive Player at the Virginia College Athletic Association Tournament.

That same year, David anchored a defense that allowed just 15 goals in 13 games, leading the Generals to their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid. The team advanced to the College Division Championship, finishing as the national runner-up after a narrow 1-0 loss to the Coast Guard Academy. For his outstanding contributions, David was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.

Beyond the field, Redmond remained an integral part of the W&L community. While in law school, he served as a freshman soccer coach and a college soccer official. His leadership extended to student life, where he was a two-time class officer, Student Bar Association officer, president of Sigma Nu, and an inducted member of Omicron Delta Kappa. In 2004, he became the first soccer player inducted into the W&L Athletics Hall of Fame. His impact on the program continues through the D. D. Redmond Defensive Soccer Award, established in 1972 and still awarded annually.

A distinguished attorney, Redmond built a career in commercial real estate law at Christian & Barton in Richmond, Va., where he practiced for over four decades. David's devotion to W&L persisted throughout his life. He served on the Alumni Association Board and as president of the Law Council, and in 2021, he was honored with the Five-Star Distinguished Alumni Award for his exemplary leadership, responsibility, and service.

David is survived by his wife, Eugenia. his children Robert (Cheryl Weber) and Sarah, and his grandchildren Anastasia Scott Redmond, Mary Stewart Redmond, Robert Scott Redmond, Jr., and Eugenia Elizabeth Redmond.

Memorial gifts may be made to St. James's Episcopal Church, 1205 W. Franklin St., Richmond, VA, 23220, or St. Joseph's Villa, 8000 Brook Rd, Richmond, VA, 23227. David's enduring legacy of leadership, service, and athletic achievement will forever be cherished by the W&L community.
