No. 4 Generals draw against Oglethorpe to close out Sonny Carter Invitational

ATLANTA – The No. 4 Washington and Lee men's soccer team wrapped up play at the Emory University Sonny Carter Invitational on Saturday with a 1-1 draw against Oglethorpe.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Generals (0-1-1) struck first in the 16th minute when they earned a corner kick. Senior Willy Hall took the corner and found the head of junior Spencer Furman on an in-swinging cross for a 1-0 lead.
  • W&L controlled the pace of play in the first half to take their one-goal lead into halftime. The Generals did not allow a single shot attempt from the Stormy Petrels (0-1-1), and they took six shots of their own.
  • The game remained in the Generals' favor until a foul was called inside the goal box in the 81st minute to give Oglethorpe a penalty kick. Owen VanMarter took the shot for the Stormy Petrels and scored inside the left post, just beyond the outstretched reach of W&L sophomore keeper Miles Furman.
  • The Generals nearly regained the lead in the 90th minute. Junior Jack Travis took a shot through traffic that ricocheted off the left post and parallel to the goal line, but into the waiting hands of Oglethorpe keeper Sebastian Lewis.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Spencer Furman's goal in the first half for the Generals was his first of the season and third of his career. Hall was credited with the assist for his corner cross on the play.
  • VanMarter's goal came on his only shot attempt of the game.
  • Sophomore Ryan Sharpe and Stanlee Etienne led their respective sides in shot attempts with two apiece and combined for three shots on goal.
  • Miles Furman made two saves for the Generals in his first collegiate start. Lewis stopped six shots in 90 minutes of action in the Oglethorpe net.
TEAM STATS:
  • W&L held the shot advantage, 6-0, at halftime and finished the game with a 12-6 positive margin after both teams shot six times each in the second half.
  • The Blue and White doubled the Stormy Petrels' corner kick output in both halves to finish the game with a 6-3 edge.
