2025 Men’s and Women’s Swimming NCAA Championship Preview

Ten Swimmers to represent the Blue and White on the national stage.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Washington and Lee University men’s and women’s swimming has ten swimmers heading to the 2025 Division III NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships this weekend in Greensboro, N.C.

For the third straight year, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) and the Greensboro Aquatic Center will play host for the National Championship. The four day event will span from Wednesday, March 19 to Saturday, March 22.

200 Butterfly

 

Senior Bella Tarbet is making her first appearance at the NCAA Championships, where she will swim individually in the 200 butterfly after posting an NCAA B-cut time at the ODAC Championships in February. The East Hampton, N.Y., native enters the championship with the 30th-fastest time in the 200 butterfly, clocking in at 2:04.95.

The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, March 21, as the first event of the preliminary rounds. Tarbet will also compete with the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams, as well as the 200 medley relay team, this weekend.

50 & 100 Freestyle

 

Sophomore Leighton Chapman is making his second appearance at the national meet in as many years after earning a bid in the 100 freestyle. The Houston, Texas, native holds the tenth-fastest time in the field heading into the weekend, posting a time of 44.08s at the ODAC Championships. Chapman will also swim individually in the 50 freestyle this weekend, having posted the 31st-best time in the field with an NCAA B-cut time of 20.35s. The 50 freestyle is scheduled for Wednesday, March 19, while the 100 freestyle is set for Saturday, March 22.

In addition to his individual events, the 2024 Second Team All-American will compete on all five relay teams this weekend, including the 200, 400, and 800 freestyle relay teams, as well as the 200 and 400 medley squads.

For the third straight season, junior Dalton Jobe will make an appearance at the National Championships after posting a qualifying time in the 200 freestyle. The Henrico, Va., native holds the tenth-fastest time in the country this season in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 1:37.81. He also recorded the 24th-best time (4:30.88) in the 500 freestyle and the 33rd-fastest time (1:50.03) in the 200 individual medley.

The 2024 First Team All-American will also compete in three of the five relays this weekend, including the 200, 400, and 800 freestyle relay teams. Jobe will compete in the 500 freestyle and 200 IM on Wednesday, March 19, while the 200 freestyle relay is scheduled for Thursday, March 20.

100 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, 200 Breaststroke

 

Senior Matt Fritz is heading back to the National Meet for the second straight season after earning an invitation in the 100 butterfly. The Reston, Va., native holds the seventh-fastest time in the event heading into the final weekend, clocking in at 47.48s. The 2024 Second Team All-American will also compete in the 100 backstroke and 200 breaststroke this weekend. The 100 butterfly is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, with the 100 backstroke and 100 breaststroke set to begin on Friday, March 21.

Fritz will also compete on the 200 freestyle relay team, as well as the 200 and 400 medley relay teams this weekend.

200 Freestyle

Senior Luke Nagel earned a bid to the National Championships for the second straight season with the 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams and will also compete as an individual in the 200 freestyle. Nagel, a Wayne, Pa., native, holds the 19th-fastest time in the 200 freestyle after clocking an NCAA B-cut time of 1:38.21 at the ODAC Championships in February. Nagel will compete alongside Dalton Jobe in the event on Thursday, March 20.

The 2024 Second Team All-American will also race with the 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams on Friday and Saturday.

Relay Teams

Bella Tarbet, Amelia Maloof, Vivian Pickerel, and Myla Rice all earned bids in the 200 freestyle relay after posting a qualifying time of 1:34.02 in February, which ranks 17th in Division III this season. The quartet will compete on Thursday night in the fourth session, which starts at 6 p.m. The squad will also compete in the 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay at the national meet, ranking 26th in both events with times of 3:30.57 and 1:46.82, respectively. The 200 medley relay is slated for Friday, March 21, while the 400 freestyle relay will take place on Saturday, March 22.

On the men’s side, the Generals earned bids in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays, as well as the 200 medley relay, after posting three times within the top 15. Dalton Jobe, Leighton Chapman, Charles Byars, and Luke Nagel hold the fifth-fastest time in the 800 freestyle relay this season, posting a time of 6:32.26, while ranking eighth in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 2:57.72. Byars, Harrison Cerone, Matt Fritz, and Chapman posted a qualifying time of 1:28.31, the 15th-fastest time, to earn a bid to the championship meet as well.

Additionally, Byars, Cerone, Fritz, and Chapman will team up in the 400 medley relay at the national meet. The squad ranks 20th in Division III with a time of 3:17.03. Chapman, Fritz, Byars, and Jobe will also race together in the 200 freestyle relay this weekend, with the quartet ranking 17th in the country this season with a time of 1:21.03.

The 400 medley relay team will kick off the relay events on Wednesday, March 19, with the 200 freestyle relay to follow on Thursday night. On Friday evening, the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relay teams will compete for a national title, with the 400 freestyle relay rounding out the four-day meet on Saturday night.
