ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The 16th-ranked Washington and Lee men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 result against No. 24 North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Battling Bishops (3-2) won all three doubles matches to jump out to the 1-0 lead, however, it did not come easy. Outside of a 6-1 win for Luca Knese and Albert Sitwell over
Evan Erb and
Will Kistler at No. 1, the other two doubles matches needed tiebreaks to decide winners. The Bishops' No. 2 team of Shori Nishizoe and Logan Stoltz downed senior
James Kurani and first-year
Ryan Good, 7-6 (1), before Rodrigo Montes de Oca and Diego Segovia edged senior
Eli Hirshberg and sophomore
Heys Parker, 7-6 (5), at No. 3.
N.C. Wesleyan then won all six singles matches to pull away for the win. Segovia and Nishizoe earned 6-3, 6-2 wins over Kistler and Parker at Nos. 1 and 4, respectively, with Kurani falling against Knese, 6-2, 7-5. The Bishops' Bohdan Zhylchuk then defeated Hirshberg (7-6 (4), 6-3), at No. 3, while Sitwell and Stoltz rounded out the match with wins at Nos. 5 and 6 over sophomore
Sanjheev Rao (8-7 (4)) and junior
Jake Vo (8-3).
