INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Law Student Cassie Carr of the Washington and Lee University women's cross country and track & field teams, was selected as a recipient of the 2025 Fall NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Carr is the 28th General to earn the prestigious scholarship and the second in as many years as Spencer Kriss '22 earned the distinction in 2024. Overall, Washington and Lee has had 47 graduates earn the postgraduate scholarship since 1970.

"It is a huge honor to receive this award from the NCAA," said Carr. "Running has been such a critical part of my undergraduate, and now graduate, experience. I know that the resilience that this sport has taught me will always be an invaluable tool for my success, something which has certainly proved true as I have navigated the challenges that arise during the first year of law school. I am extremely grateful to all of my coaches, teammates, and athletic trainers, past and present, who have played a part in instilling that quality in me, and for their unwavering support and kindness throughout my NCAA career. It is because of each of them that this time has been so special."

As the valedictorian of Washington & Jefferson College, she graduated with honors in psychology, earning recognition for her outstanding work with the Richard R. Martin Prize and the 2024 Trelka Prize for Excellence in Original Research in the Life Sciences. She was also named the recipient of the David K. Scarborough Leadership Award and the Rule, Hughes, Murphy Award. Carr was an eight-time Dean's List honoree and Alpha Scholar, maintaining a GPA above 3.85 while earning U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Honors three times. She was also named a College Sport Communicators (CSC) Academic All-American in 2022 and 2023 and the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Scholar Athlete of the Year Award while being selected as the NCAA Elite 90 Award winner at the 2023 Cross Country Championships.

Carr is in her first year at the Washington and Lee University School of Law. Following her completion of Law school, she plans to go into academia and become a law professor.

During her career on the cross country course, Carr has been a four-time All-Region selection while qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 2021, 2023, and 2024. The four-time First Team All-Conference honoree was named the Prezpys Women's Athlete of the Year for the 2023-24 school year while earning W&J's Salvitti Award and Reardon Award.

On the track, Carr is the W&L school record holder in the mile run and secured the indoor Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) crown in the event. She earned First Team and Third Team honors at the Indoor ODAC Championship while resetting the meet record in the mile run. Carr also earned a bid to the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.

"We were thrilled to learn Cassie received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Cassie is an amazing runner, teammate, and most importantly an incredible person," head women's cross country coach Mike Dager stated. "Our program has benefited greatly because Cassie decided to attend Law School here in Lexington. I couldn't think of a more deserving person to receive this prestigious award from the NCAA.  We look forward to Cassie's final semester of eligibility this outdoor season and then having her remain with the team in a student coaching role over the next two years."
