Men’s Track & Field Breaks Pair of Records in Season Opening Double Feature

LEXINGTON, Va. / BOSTON, Mass. - A pair of program records and one Old Dominon Athletic Conference (ODAC) record fell on Saturday as the Washington and Lee University men's track and field team opened their season in Lexington and Boston, Mass. on Saturday.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MEET
  • Keaton Rush highlighted the opening weekend for the Generals as he took down the program and ODAC record at the Sharon Coleyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University. Rush clocked in a time of 14:28.95 to break Charles Scharf's program record of 14:37.51 and Ricky Flynn's (Lynchburg) ODAC record of 14:28.98. Sam Daunt also competed in the event alongside Rush, clocking in a time of 14:38.48 which ranks third in program history.
  • The Generals earned four wins at VMI's Colonel Bev Read Opener on Saturday afternoon, with Macky Gartley and Leo Avigliano securing victories in the 60m hurdles and weight throw, respectively. Gartley kicked off the season with a bang, breaking Joe O'Connor's program record in the 60m hurdles as he clocked a time of 8.11s. Avigliano claimed the weight throw title after recording a toss of 14.14m (46'-04.75") on his third throw of the event. DJ McDonough picked up the Generals' third win after clocking a time of 1:04.26 in the 500m. The final win of the meet came in the 1,000m, as John Hogan crossed the finish line in 2:35.70 to claim first place.
  • John Daniels, Danny Jakubowski-Lewis, and Luke Heinze also joined Gartley with top-eight finishes in the 60m hurdles. Daniels crossed the finish line in 8.99s to place fourth, while Jakubowski-Lewis clocked 9.03s to finish fifth. Heinze took seventh with a time of 9.61s. Connor LaCour and DJ McDonough finished back-to-back in the 300m in third and fourth place, respectively. LaCour posted a time of 34.53s to lead the duo, with McDonough close behind at 34.65s. Mitchell DiMond and Jack Camp both turned in top-eight finishes in the 1,000m alongside Hogan. DiMond finished third in 2:39.12, while Camp crossed the line in 2:58.65 to place seventh.
  • Mason Mandis had a solid debut for the Blue and White, posting the fifth-best mark in the long jump with a leap of 6.58m (21'-07.25") to finish third. Ford Hunter earned a fifth-place finish in the high jump, clearing 1.75m (5'-08.75"). Charlie Strobach and Troy Spillman both competed in the pole vault, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. Strobach cleared 3.80m (12'-05.50") for fifth, while Spillman went over 3.50m (11'-05.75") to finish right behind him.
  • Austin Halterman and Maddox Noll joined Avigliano with top-eight finishes in the weight throw. Halterman placed second with a toss of 13.82m (45'-04.25"), while Noll finished sixth at 9.43m (30'-11.25"). Noll was also the top finisher for the Blue and White in the shot put, placing third with a mark of 13.66m (44'-09.75"). Avigliano finished fourth at 12.65m (41'-06.00"), Ezekiel Mullins took fifth with a toss of 11.40m (37'-05.00"), and Halterman rounded out the group in sixth with a mark of 11.19m (36'-08.50").
