BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Meeting for the first time since 2007 in the conference finals, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team defeated Bridgewater College in four sets to hoist their third-straight and 21st overall Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED (W&L 3-1, 25-22, 19-25, 25-16, 25-17)
- Both teams traded points to start the match before the Generals (23–9) went on a 7–2 run to take an 11–8 lead thanks to three kills from Grace Mitchener and two from Emery Goerig. The Eagles (21–8) responded with a 3–1 run, but the Generals answered with a 3–1 stretch of their own to regain a three-point edge. Mitchener added a pair of kills, with Riley Debiec chipping in another. After more back-and-forth action, the Blue and White used a 4–1 run to reach set point, fueled by two kills from Debiec, one from Cara Hamil, and an attacking error from the Eagles. W&L claimed the first frame after Lindsay Kelley sailed her serve out of bounds, securing a 25–22 win.
- Bridgewater opened up set two with a 3–1 run before back-to-back kills from Mitchener and Debiec tied the set at three. The Eagles then broke it open with an 11–2 run to jump ahead 14–5. The Generals battled back, rattling off four straight points to cut the deficit to five. That run featured a block from Goerig and Mitchener, along with a Mitchener service ace. W&L cut the lead to five again following a 3–0 run by the Eagles with a 4–1 response of their own, including kills from Goerig, Hamil, Nichoson, and Debiec. Another 3–1 run by the Eagles extended their lead to seven before four unanswered points from the Generals made it a three-point game. Mitchener secured the lone kill of the stretch, aided by three Bridgewater errors. The Eagles closed the set with a 4–1 run to take the second frame 25–19.
- The Eagles took an early lead in the third set before a Hamil kill and a Debiec block gave the Generals a 4–3 edge. Bridgewater reclaimed the lead with a 3–1 run, but the Blue and White responded with a 5–1 run to go up 10–7, highlighted by two kills and a block from Mitchener. Both teams continued to trade points with W&L holding the lead until they pushed ahead by six with a 6–1 run. The scoring stretch featured three kills from Mitchener, one from Ava Gaines, and a block from Mitchener and Goerig. The Generals took a 2–1 set lead following another 6–1 run, which included three kills from Hamil and one each from Goerig and Mitchener.
- W&L kicked off the fourth set with a 6–1 run, featuring a kill from Hamil, a block from Debiec, and four attacking errors from the Eagles. Bridgewater responded with back-to-back points before the Generals unleashed a 6–2 run, fueled by two kills from Goerig, one each from Gaines and Debiec, and a Debiec service ace. The Generals stretched the lead to 18–7 after kills from Mitchener, Goerig, and Emily Schellenberg, and a service ace from Addi Johnson. The Eagles rattled off five straight points to cut the lead to six before both teams exchanged points, bringing the score to 22–16 in favor of W&L. The Generals capped off the match with a 3–1 run, including a block from Schellenberg and Mitchener, a Mitchener kill, and finally a Goerig kill off a Nichoson assist to secure the conference crown for the third-straight year.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Reagan Stoop of Bridgewater led the match with 18 kills on 58 swings for a .190 hitting percentage. Faith DePew (16) and Agnes Alford (12) also reached double figures in the loss.
- Grace Mitchener paced the Generals with 17 kills on 67 attempts with five errors for a .179 hitting percentage. Riley Debiec (12), Emery Goerig (11), and Cara Hamil (11) each posted double-digit kills in Saturday's win.
- Sienna Nichoson dished out a match-high 41 assists, marking her second straight match with 41 assists. Maya Veselinovic led the Eagles with 25 assists, while Lindsay Kelley added 22.
- Anna Black of Bridgewater led all players with 28 digs, and Alexis Currie recorded 24. Mitchener led the Generals with 23 digs, notching her 18th double-double of the season. Vivi Vasquez (18), Emily Schellenberg (17), Nichoson (12), and Penelope Quiles (10) also reached double figures in digs.
- Mitchener and Agnes Alford each led the match with four blocks, with Mitchener adding one solo stop.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals moved to 23-9 on the season while hoisting their third straight — and 21st overall — title with the win. They have now won five of the last six conference crowns and posted their third three-peat.
- W&L will head to the NCAA Tournament for the 18th time in program history — and for the third consecutive season as well.
- The Blue and White recorded 57 kills on 196 attempts with 17 errors for a .204 hitting percentage, including clips over .300 in both the first and third sets. They led the match in kills and assists (55), while matching the Eagles with three service aces and six blocks.
