LEXINGTON, Va. - The sixth-ranked Washington and Lee University women's basketball team scored double-digit points in all four quarters to secure a 71-38 win over Southern Virginia University in their home opener at Holekamp Gym on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elka Prechel kicked the game off with a bang as she knocked down a three-pointer which started a 10-6 run for the Blue and White (3-0). They led by 11 heading into the second quarter after Icy Keneah knocked down a jumper and added a free throw. Their lead only expanded in the second, taking an 18-point lead after a Quinn McGuinness layup followed by a jumper from Prechel. W&L took a 37-15 lead into the break after Bri Shuttlewood knocked down a pair of shots from the charity stripe and Sam Collins laid one in on a fast break off a Keneah pass.
- The Knights (0-1) scored the first four points of the second half with a pair of two-pointers from Aysia Foster and Ruth Kempler. Back-to-back threes from McGuinness and Riley Bryant kick started an 18-4 run for the Generals, putting them up 55-25. McGuinness and Collins both knocked down a pair of shots from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter before a pair of free throws from McGuinness and a Keneah layup gave the Generals a 41-point lead, their largest of the night. Katie Lawson knocked down the final point of the game with a free throw, securing the 71-38 win over the Knights.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Quinn McGuinness led all scorers with a season-high 17 points, adding four steals and four assists in the win. The senior guard shot 5-of-7 (71%) from the floor, knocking down both of her three-point attempts as well. Mary Schleusner picked up her third-straight double-double of the season, tallying ten points while grabbing 16 rebounds. She also forced three turnovers and registered two blocks.
- Aysia Foster led the Knights with 11 points while posting a team-high two blocks. Anna Kimball of Southern Virginia collected a team-high seven rebounds while adding nine points. Abigail Snyder led the Knights with three steals, while three other players recorded one each.
TEAM STATS
- The Generals moved to 3-0 on the young season, scoring 70 points in all three contests. The win marked the third straight over Southern Virginia, moving the all-time series lead to 11-1 in favor of the Blue and White.
- They registered 39 points in the paint while receiving 30 points off the bench. W&L scored 22 points off the Knights' 24 turnovers as well. They also knocked down a season-high six three-pointers in the win while shooting a season-high 81% (13-of-16) at the free throw line.
- W&L's defense limited the Knights' offense to a 15-of-60 (25%) performance from the floor while only allowing two three-pointers. They forced 24 turnovers while registering nine steals and five blocks.

- The sixth-ranked Generals are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 15 as they travel to Virginia Beach, Va. for the TowneBank Tip Off Tournament at Virginia Wesleyan University. They will square off with Washington College (Md.) at 7 p.m.
