Series History:
The Generals and Bison will meet for the second time in program history on Saturday afternoon in Lexington. The last time these two teams met was on October 4th, 1913 where W&L defeated Gallaudet 24-0.
Scouting the Bison:
Gallaudet is heading to Lexington with a 1-3 record and a 1-2 mark in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. The Bison dropped their season opener 9-7 to Albright before kicking off conference action with a 39-30 win over Averett on September 20. Since then, they have lost two straight—falling to Roanoke 38-14 and Guilford 55-0.
Last week against Guilford, the Bison offense managed just 130 total yards, including 71 rushing yards and 59 passing yards. They threw two interceptions and fumbled four times. Quarterback Dylan Officer completed 3-of-12 passes (25%) for 36 yards and one interception. JeVaughn Sargent led the ground game with six carries for 23 yards, averaging 3.8 yards per rush. Dwayne Collins II caught two passes for a team-high 28 receiving yards. On defense, Dawson Ethington led the way with 14 total tackles, including six solo stops and 0.5 tackles for loss. Alen Rubinshteyn recorded a team-high 1.5 tackles for loss and added one sack.
On the season, the Bison are averaging 15.0 points per game and 264.0 yards of total offense. Their attack is balanced, averaging 133.8 rushing yards and 130.3 passing yards per game. JeVaughn Sargent is 39-for-86 (45.3%) on the season with four touchdowns and six interceptions while adding 88 yards on the ground with two scores. Marcus Gabriel-Brown leads the rushing unit with 53 carrries for 374 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 7.1 yards per carry. Jaylen Johnson leads the team with 12 catches for 134 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, they are allowing 33.0 points per game, surrendering 134.5 rushing yards and 299.7 passing yards per contest. Dawson Ethington leads the defensive unit with 35 tackles and 22 solo stops. Ethington has a team-high four tackles for loss while adding two sacks. Trevin Adams leads the team with three sacks while adding 18 tackles and two tackles for loss. Joshua Saaty leads the secondary with an interception ans six pass breakups while adding 23 tackles.
Scouting the Generals:
The Generals got back in the win column last week after upsetting No. 21/24 Hampden-Sydney, 42-34 on the road. W&L has a 2-3 record heading into week six of the season with a 2-1 mark in conference play.
Last week at H-SC, the Generals generated 462 yards of offense while rushing for 351 yards and five touchdowns to secure the upset win. The Generals scored on three-straight possessions to take a 21-7 lead following an opening touchdown from the Tigers. Ty Collins connected with Teddy Sparrow for a 75-yard passing touchdown before H-SC cut the deficit to seven before the break. Anthony Crawford found the end zone twice for the Generals' final scores of the game as he scored from seven and two yards out to put the Generals up 42-34. Will Mahmud secured the win as he picked off quarterback Carter Sido with 1:53 to play. Collins was 3-for-4 (75%) for 111 yards and a touchdown while adding 70 yards on the ground with one score. Crawford found the end zone four times as he rushed 24 times for 104 yards. Sparrow led the receiving corps with one catch for 75 yards and one touchdown. Brennan Stout led the defense with 14 tackles, three solo, while Gabe Joyner had a career-high ten solo stops. Will Knight secured a sack in the win with Mahmud securing his first career interception.
On the season, the Generals are averaging 25.0 points per game while compiling 361.6 yards of offense per game, the fourth-best in the league. They lead the conference in rushing yards per game with 260.6 yards while averaging 101.0 passing yards. Collins has completed 42 of his 75 (56%) passes this season for 505 yards and five touchdowns with four interceptions. He has added two scores on the ground while rushing for 138 yards. Crawford leads the rushing unit with 129 carries for 678 yards and nine touchdowns, the most rushing yards and TDs in the ODAC this season. Sparrow has a team-high 153 receiving yards on seven catches with two touchdowns.
Defensively, the Blue and White are allowing 26.20 points per game and 366.8 yards of total offense. They are holding teams to 166.8 yards on the ground this season, giving up 200.0 yards in the air per game. Brennan Stout leads the team and ranks third in the ODAC with 54 tackles, averaging 13.5 tackles per game. Will Knight and Will Mahmud lead W&L with 2.5 tackles for loss while four Generals have recorded a sack.
National Top-25 Polls:
Both Top-25 polls featured the same top-five teams with North Central (Ill.) remaining as the No. 1-ranked team in the country. Mount Union follows at No. 2 while Johns Hopkins holds steady at No. 3. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse checked in at No. 4 after beating UW-Whitewater 23-20 last week while Salisbury moved up one spot to No. 5.
National Statistical Rankings:
The Generals' multi-faceted rushing offense ranks ninth in Division III this season in rushing offense, averaging 260.6 yards per game. The offense ranks 23rd in time of possession as they have held the ball for 33:25 minutes per game. W&L's offensive line has protected quarterback Ty Collins, only allowing three sacks this season—an average of 0.60 per game—which ranks 24th in Division III this season.
Anthony Crawford remains one of the top running backs in Division III this season, as he ranks third in the nation in rushing touchdowns with nine, while rushing for 678 yards—the sixth-most in the country this season. He ranks eighth in total touchdowns while averaging 135.6 yards on the ground per game, which ranks 10th in Division III.
Around the ODAC:
Last Saturday included the first shake-up of the ODAC standings following four week-five conference matchups. Randolph-Macon stands atop the ODAC table at 3-0 in league play and is now joined at 4-1 overall by No. 21/24 Hampden-Sydney following the Tigers' loss to Washington and Lee. The Yellow Jackets earned a win at Roanoke with the first-year program showing well its first outing against the traditional ODAC power. Guilford picked up its first ODAC win by eclipsing 50 points for the first time since 2018 with a shutout at Gallaudet. Shenandoah never trailed in a tight home win over Bridgewater. Averett was idle on its schedule by week.
