ODAC Equestrian Championships Preview

10/24/2025 8:00:00 AM

LEXINGTON, Va. - For the first time in league history, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Equestrian Championship will be held in the fall semester, with competition set for Friday, October 24, at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Va. The event begins at 1:00 p.m. ET at the Sandy Arena, marking the second straight year and third time since 2022 that the championship has been hosted at the Lexington-based facility.

Five institutions—Washington and Lee, Bridgewater, Hollins, Sweet Briar, and Lynchburg—will vie for the 2025 title in a three-round championship featuring two fence rounds and one flat round.

Representing the Generals will be Kaycie Miranda, Jade Condrell, Eva Lunn, and Elisabeth Marek. Both Lunn and Marek will compete in the flat phase in addition to fences.

The ODAC Championship format differs from regular Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) competition. Instead of drawing unfamiliar horses provided by the host, each school competes with a team of four riders using their own horses. The championship includes two Equitation Over Fences classes, which form the basis for All-ODAC consideration, followed by Equitation on the Flat, where two riders per team demonstrate precision and responsiveness to the judges’ commands. Team scoring drops the lowest fences average from each round and combines the remaining scores with flat results to determine the overall team champion.

Head Coach Chris Mitchell, in his first season at the helm, is eager to see how his team performs against a strong field of conference competition.

“I am always excited for the ODAC Championships, and I look forward to strong competition from all of the equestrian ODAC teams. I think our team will be poised and ready to make a run at the title this year.”

Lynchburg enters as the three-time defending ODAC champion, having captured its first traditional title in 2023. The Hornets are seeking a fourth straight conference crown after claiming last year’s event hosted by Bridgewater College, while Hollins finished as reserve champion. Washington and Lee placed fourth in the 2024 championship, just one point behind Bridgewater.

This year’s competition will be judged by Eric Dirks, Peg Seals, and Paddy Downing-Nyegard. A coaches’ meeting and team order-of-go draw is scheduled for 11:00 a.m., followed by the three competition classes:

  • Class 1 - ODAC Equitation Over Fences
  • Class 2 - ODAC Equitation Over Fences
  • Class 3 - ODAC Equitation on the Flat

Live championship scoring and stream will be available through the ODAC’s official website at odaconline.com
