No. 22 Volleyball Sweeps EMU in ODAC Midweek Match

LEXINGTON, Va. - The 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team downed Eastern Mennonite University in straight sets on Tuesday evening inside Holekamp Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED (W&L 3-0, 25-7, 25-19, 25-7)
  • The Generals (17-4, 5-2 ODAC) kicked off the match with a 6-1 run thanks to two kills each from Ryan Taylor and Riley Debiec, alongside one from Cara Hamil. The Blue and White followed up that run with an 11-1 scoring stretch which featured three kills from Emily Schellenberg, two from Emery Goerig, and one each from Addi Johnson and Debiec. Goerig and Johnson stuffed a Kassidy Meadows attack before Goerig recorded a solo block. The Royals (5-14, 1-4 ODAC) broke up the lengthy run with back-to-back points before W&L capped off the first frame with a 7-1 run. The final run featured two kills from Hamil, one from Taylor, as well as a block from the duo.
  • After EMU registered the first two points of the set, Debiec recorded a kill while Hamil registered a service ace to give W&L a 3-2 lead. Both teams traded points until the Generals rattled off eight straight points to take a 19-12 lead. The run was kick started by a Debiec kill, followed by two more kills from Debiec, one from Vivi Vasquez, as well as a Hamil service ace. The Generals claimed the second set 25-19 following a 3-1 run that included kills from Hamil and Debiec, as well as a Royals' attacking error.
  • After the Royals secured the first two points of the third frame with a pair of kills, the Blue and White went on a 4-1 run which featured two kills from Debiec and a Lexie Stone service ace to take a 4-3 lead. A kill from Logan Turchetta tied the set at five before the Generals took a 16-5 lead with 11 straight points. The lengthy run was highlighted by three kills from Hamil, two from Goerig, one from Johnson, alongside a Schellenberg service ace. A Jada Parker kill broke up the run before a Hamil kill kick started a 7-0 run which included another kill from Hamil, a Turi Trainor service ace, and a block from Diane Pierre-Louis and Taylor. The Blue and White scored two straight points to claim the third set 25-7, as Taylor recorded a kill along with an EMU attacking error.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Debiec led all players with 13 kills on 24 attempts with three errors for a .417 hitting percentage. Hamil added 11 kills in the win on 28 attempts with a pair of errors for a .321 clip, while adding 12 digs—marking her third double-double of the season. Kenley Smith and Logan Turchetta led the Royals with five kills each.
  • Addi Johnson dished out 25 assists in the win, adding five digs and one block. McKenzie Taylor led EMU with nine assists, while Kaitlyn Custis dished out eight.
  • Emerson Moats of EMU led the match with 15 digs, while three Generals reached double figures. Vivi Vasquez posted a team-high 14 digs, while Schellenberg dug out 13 attacks.
  • Hamil posted a career-high three service aces, while Schellenberg and Turi Trainor added one each. Four Royals each had one service ace this evening.
  • Ryan Taylor and Goerig posted a match-high two blocks, while Diane Pierre-Louis, Johnson, and Hamil each had one. Emma Rogers and Kaitlyn Custis each had one block for the Royals.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • With the win, the Generals moved to 17-4 on the season with a 5-2 mark in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play. It also marked the 38th-straight win over the Royals, dating back to the 1995 season.
  • The Blue and White recorded 42 kills on 103 swings with only six errors for an impressive .350 hitting percentage, registering a match-high .441 hitting percentage in set one.
  • Senior Riley Debiec moved up one spot to 11th all-time in career kills, surpassing Sydney Heifner and Michelle Chastain with 1,122 kills. She is also nearing the top ten for sets played with 414, only 12 sets away from moving past Lauren Edmonson.

  • The Generals are back in action on Friday, Oct. 17 as they travel to Ashland, Va. for an ODAC match up at Randolph-Macon. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m.
