No. 8 Men’s Golf Turns in Sixth Place Finish at the Tartan Invitational

LIGONIER, Pa. - The eighth-ranked Washington and Lee University men's golf team turned in their third top-ten finish of the fall as they finished sixth at the Tartan Invitational.

The Blue and White finished sixth out of 16 teams with a score of 40-over par (298-303-303 – 904) across three rounds of action at the Laurel Valley Golf Club. W&L shot a combined 15-over par (303) in the final round, playing the front nine to a score of five-over par with four birdies and an eagle from Alex Holzapfel, while shooting ten-over on the back nine with six birdies and a Jonathan McEwen eagle.


McEwen paced the Generals with his third top-ten finish of the season, climbing 26 spots in the final round to finish in fourth place out of 87 golfers. Tim Kaufman finished in a tie for 15th with a score of seven-over par, while Holzapfel wrapped up his first collegiate tournament in a tie for 25th place with a score of ten-over par. Turner Edwards finished in a tie for 64th place with a score of 19-over par, while Charlie Krasnewich finished in 84th place with a score of 28-over par.


No. 6 Huntingdon secured the team title with a score of 22-over par, firing a seven-over in the final round, while No. 5 Illinois Wesleyan and No. 23 Rochester tied for second with a score of 25-over par. No. 4 Carnegie Mellon was one shot behind the Titans and Yellowjackets with a score of 26-over par, while No. 1 Emory rounded out the top five with a score of 35-over par.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Jonathan McEwen moved up 26 spots in the final round, firing a four-under 68 on Tuesday afternoon to lead the Generals. He finished the tournament in a tie for fourth place out of 87 golfers with a score of four-over par (76-76-68 – 220). In the final round, McEwen was four-under on the back nine with two birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole, a 564-yard par five. He shot even-par on the front nine with two birdies coming in a three-hole stretch while adding five pars to the card. He led the tournament in par five scoring, playing the holes to a score of seven-under par (4.42 average), while ranking 19th in par three scoring with an average score of 3.33 (+4). He led the tournament alongside three other golfers with two eagles while ranking 21st in birdies with eight.
  • Sophomore Tim Kaufman carded a six-over 78 on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for 15th place with a score of seven-over par (73-72-78 – 223). Kaufman wrapped up the final round with three birdies and six pars. He finished the tournament ranked seventh in par four scoring with an average score of 4.10 (+3), while ranking 19th in par five scoring, playing those holes to a score of two-under par (4.83 average). He also ranked 15th in total birdies with nine.
  • Sophomore Alex Holzapfel wrapped up his first collegiate tournament with a four-over par 76 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 25th place with a score of ten-over par (72-78-76 – 226). Holzapfel had an eight-hole streak where he recorded seven pars and one birdie, while also carding an eagle on the third hole, a 525-yard par five. He wrapped up the tournament in a tie for fifth with one eagle, while ranking 12th in par three scoring with an average score of 3.25 (+3), and 18th in par four scoring, playing those holes to a score of five-over par (4.17 average).
  • Senior captain Turner Edwards registered a nine-over 81 in the final round to wrap up the tournament with a score of 19-over par (77-77-81 – 235), finishing in a tie for 64th place. Edwards carded a pair of birdies and six pars in the final round.
  • Sophomore Charlie Krasnewich rounded out the Generals with a 14-over par 86 this afternoon, finishing the tournament in 84th place. He registered nine pars in the final round of the tournament.
