Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

No. 10 Generals roll past Roanoke for sixth straight win

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team scored twice in both halves to overpower Roanoke by a 4-0 final score on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After putting heavy pressure on the Roanoke (6-7-1, 3-3-0 ODAC) defense across the first 20 minutes of play, the Generals (10-2-1, 6-0-0 ODAC) broke through at the 19:53 mark. Senior Bryn Bissinger looped a shot over the keeper from the right side after taking a corner pass short from sophomore Avery Hannah.
  • W&L quickly added a second goal to their total when junior Amelia Manke found the back of the net in the 25th minute. Another corner kick was lofted into the box and an attempted clear came to Manke's foot. Manke quickly fired a shot and beat the keeper to the right post.
  • The Generals tacked on their third goal in the 60th minute. Sophomore Elizabeth Zimmerman tried her luck from the right side and had her shot saved, but the carom came to senior Sarah Zimmerman who headed the ball into the back of the net.
  • W&L put the finishing touches on the four-goal win in the 87th minute on a goal from junior Gracie Jorgensen. She tried an initial shot that was saved and made its way to sophomore Maren Brown on the left post. Brown then hit a shot off the post, which came back to Jorgensen for the tap-in goal.
TOP PERFORMERS:
  • Sarah Zimmerman's goal was her team-leading fifth of the season, and she led all players in the game with 10 shots and five on goal. Manke tallied her fourth goal of the season, while Bissinger and Jorgensen each scored their second.
  • Elizabeth Zimmerman got her team-best sixth assist of the year on her sister's goal, Hannah's assist on Bissinger's goal was her second and Brown got her first helper of the year.
  • Jorgensen and Elizabeth Zimmerman followed Sarah Zimmerman in shot attempts with four each. Jorgensen put three attempts on goal.
  • Roanoke keeper Grace Suchy performed strongly throughout the game, making 15 saves in the losing effort, including several diving stops. W&L sophomore goalie Kate McEnroe made one save to notch her fourth shutout of the season.
