TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its 2025 Division III preseason national women's tennis team rankings on Wednesday, and Washington and Lee earned the No. 10 spot, while also featuring three players in the individual rankings.
In limited action during the fall slate, the Generals posted a 2-0 record in dual matches, both in ODAC play, downing Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph-Macon by 7-0 scores. The team kicked off its season at the ITA Southeast Region Championships, where first-years
Mary Kate Kahl and
Allie Murrell made it to the doubles semifinals, while Murrell advanced to the singles semifinals and junior
Lauren Long finished as a singles quarterfinalist.
Murrell leads the way in the individual rankings for the Blue and White as the 30th-ranked singles player in Division III, plus the eighth-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region. Long will open the spring as the No. 13-ranked singles player in the region, and Murrell and Kahl are ranked ninth in the region among doubles tandems. Murrell is 3-1 in singles play so far this season, Long is 3-0, and Murrell and Kahl own a 4-1 record together in doubles play.
The Generals, who finished as the No. 10 team in the country in the final 2023-24 rankings of the season, look to build of one of the strongest seasons the program has seen in recent years. W&L went 21-2 overall a season ago, with the only losses coming against No. 22 Redlands in February and No. 7 Johns Hopkins in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16. It was the most wins in a season for the program since 2014-15 (24) and the fewest losses in a season since 2007-08 (1).
The W&L women's tennis team will begin a competitive spring schedule on February 14 when they host No. 14 Trinity (Texas) at 3:00 p.m. on the first day of their Groundhog Palooza.
