Baggett and Burns Connect in 2OT in 3-2 Win Over UMW

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University field hockey team defeated Mary Washington 3-2 in double overtime on Wednesday night at W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (5-1) battled back from two one-goal deficits to force extra time and ultimately secured the win in the 77th minute on a goal from sophomore midfielder Anne Burns Fiveash, assisted by junior Sydney Baggett. Mary Washington (3-3) took the early lead, but W&L's resilience proved too much for the Eagles in the long-fought non-conference contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • 2:13 – UMW – Following a corner, Grayson Scott opened the scoring for the Eagles, assisted by Emma Bernard. Scott redirected Bernard's shot into the back of the net. 
  • 13:23 – W&LAnne Burns Fiveash tied the game with an assist from Kate Ruffin following a penalty corner. Fiveash's shot squeaked through the keepers' legs. 
  • 37:16 – UMW – Paige Stewart sat on the back post and put Mary Washington back in front, assisted by Grayson Scott.
  • 41:00 – W&LNoelle Kokolis equalized for the Generals with an assist from Margaret Cover on a 2-on-1 opportunity in front of the cage. 
  • 76:59 – W&L – After nearly 17 minutes of overtime, Anne Burns Fiveash scored the game-winner. Sydney Baggett dribbled down the right side and sent a cross inside the circle from the endline. Fiveash received the pass and lifted the ball over the Eagles' defense, dropping it across the goal line.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • W&L outshot Mary Washington 20-8, including 11 shots on goal.
  • The Generals earned 11 penalty corners, compared to four for the Eagles.
  • Julia McDonald made two saves in goal for W&L, while Mary Washington's Tori Winans recorded eight.
  • Anne Burns Fiveash led W&L with two goals, including the overtime winner.
