LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University field hockey team defeated Mary Washington 3-2 in double overtime on Wednesday night at W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (5-1) battled back from two one-goal deficits to force extra time and ultimately secured the win in the 77th minute on a goal from sophomore midfielder Anne Burns Fiveash, assisted by junior Sydney Baggett. Mary Washington (3-3) took the early lead, but W&L's resilience proved too much for the Eagles in the long-fought non-conference contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 2:13 – UMW – Following a corner, Grayson Scott opened the scoring for the Eagles, assisted by Emma Bernard. Scott redirected Bernard's shot into the back of the net.
- 13:23 – W&L – Anne Burns Fiveash tied the game with an assist from Kate Ruffin following a penalty corner. Fiveash's shot squeaked through the keepers' legs.
- 37:16 – UMW – Paige Stewart sat on the back post and put Mary Washington back in front, assisted by Grayson Scott.
- 41:00 – W&L – Noelle Kokolis equalized for the Generals with an assist from Margaret Cover on a 2-on-1 opportunity in front of the cage.
- 76:59 – W&L – After nearly 17 minutes of overtime, Anne Burns Fiveash scored the game-winner. Sydney Baggett dribbled down the right side and sent a cross inside the circle from the endline. Fiveash received the pass and lifted the ball over the Eagles' defense, dropping it across the goal line.
