LEXINGTON, Va. - The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team picked up their tenth straight win of the season, sweeping Ferrum College on Tuesday night inside Holekamp Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs FERRUM (W&L, 3-0 | 25-19, 25-11, 25-16)
- Both teams traded points to start the first set, but the Generals (10-0, 2-0 ODAC) went on a 7-1 run to take a 13-5 lead. The run featured kills from Grace Mitchener and Emery Goerig, as well as service aces from Penelope Quiles and Mitchener. The Blue and White were the first to reach 20 points in the set, using a 6-1 run that included a pair of kills and a service ace from Avery Myers. Ferrum (2-7, 0-1 ODAC) fought back, narrowing the score to 23-19, but back-to-back kills from Mitchener and Myers secured a 25-19 win for the Generals.
- After the Panthers tied the second set at two, the Generals went on a seven point run to take a 9-2 lead, highlighted by a Mitchener kill and a service ace from Vivi Vasquez. A pair of kills from Emily Schellenberg and another from Mitchener gave the Generals a commanding 20-4 lead, but Ferrum rattled off five straight points to cut the deficit to 11. However, back-to-back kills from Diane Pierre-Louis and Turi Trainor sealed the 25-11 set win for the Blue and White.
- W&L jumped to a 4-0 lead in the third set, following kills from Riley Debiec and Myers and a Buchholz service ace. The Panthers battled back, tying the match at 11 with kills from Airiana Beverly, Kenzee Chaffin, and Bailey Terry. Ferrum kept the score within one until the Generals responded with five straight points to take a 21-15 lead. The run featured kills from Debiec, Goerig, and Mitchener, while Quiles added a service ace. W&L secured their tenth win of the season with a four-point run, capped off by a Goerig kill to take the final set 25-16.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Grace Mitchener posted a match-high 13 kills on 31 attempts for a .355 hitting percentage, while tying her career-high with three service aces. Diane Pierre-Louis recorded a career-high four kills on eight attempts for a .375 hitting percentage. Airiana Beverly and Bailey Terry led Ferrum with six kills each.
- Allie Buchholz dished out 30 assists in the win, marking her fifth match this season with 30 or more assists. Ferrum's Harleigh Propst recorded a team-high 14 assists.
- Vivi Vasquez posted a match-high 19 digs in the win, while Savanna Walker, Carsyn Diggs, and Sami Kircher each recorded double-digit digs for the Panthers
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals are off to their best start since the 2021 spring season when they posted a 16-0 record. They have now extended their winning streak against the Panthers to 13 matches, having only dropped one set in that span since the streak began in 2006.
- The Generals are now 4-0 inside Holekamp Gym this season while sweeping all four opponents.
- W&L dominated all phases of tonight's match, recording eight aces, 36 assists, and digging out 56 attacks. The Blue and White registered 39 kills on 116 attempts for a .233 hitting percentage, including a .262 hitting percentage in the second set.
