LEXINGTON, Va. - The 25th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team kicked off their weekend road trip with a 3-0 win over Guilford College on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs GUILFORD (W&L, 3-0 | 25-14, 25-17, 25-5)
- After dropping the first two points of the first set, the Generals (11-0, 3-0 ODAC) responded with four unanswered points, featuring kills from Allie Buchholz and Avery Myers, as well as a service ace from Grace Mitchener. W&L then went on a 9-1 run late in the set to take a 20-9 lead, with Mitchener, Emery Goerig, and Emily Schellenberg each recording kills during the run. Riley Debiec finished off a Buchholz assist before a Guilford (3-8, 0-2 ODAC) attacking error secured a 25-14 win for the Generals.
- The second set saw back-and-forth action, tying the score at five before the Blue and White scored six straight points to take an 11-5 lead. The run included a pair of service aces from Vivi Vasquez and a kill by Mitchener. A 7-1 run extended the Generals' lead to 11, highlighted by kills from Mitchener, Myers, and Buchholz. Mitchener sealed the set for the Generals, finishing off a Buchholz assist.
- In the third set, the Generals jumped out to an 8-2 lead after dropping the first two points. The run featured kills from Goerig and Myers, along with three service aces from Mitchener. Following the Quakers' third point of the set, the Generals rattled off 11 unanswered points to take a commanding 20-3 lead, featuring a trio of kills from Myers and Debiec, with Buchholz and Mitchener each adding one. A five-point swing completed the sweep, as the Generals took the final set 25-5.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Avery Myers posted a match-high 11 kills on 30 attempts for a .167 hitting percentage. She also dug out 11 attacks to record her fifth double-double of the season.
- Allie Buchholz dished out a match-high 28 assists in the win while digging out 11 attacks.
- Grace Michener led the Generals with 14 digs while Vivi Vasquez, Buchholz and Myers each had double-digit kills.
- Emery Goerig posted a season-high in blocks while Myers set a new-career high in blocks, both stuffing five Quakers' attacks.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals remain unbeaten on the season with the win, improving to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
- W&L led all six team categories, posting a match-high eight service aces, seven blocks, and 64 digs. The Blue and White recorded 36 kills on 106 attempts for a .266 hitting percentage, including an impressive .455 hitting percentage in the third set
