Vasquez Breaks Single-Match Record, Volleyball Defeats CMU, Salisbury

ASHLAND, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team extended their unbeaten streak as they knocked off Carnegie Mellon and Salisbury on Saturday afternoon at the Randolph-Macon Quad. Sophomore Vivi Vasquez broke the single-match record for digs in the win over CMU.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs CMU (W&L, 3-2 | 20-25, 25-23, 25-20, 24-26, 15-12)
  • The Generals (9-0) and Tartans (4-4) traded points until CMU went on a 7-2 run to take a 13-10 lead in the first set. Two service errors and kills from Avery Myers and Riley Debiec brought the score to 20-19 in favor of the Tartans, but Carnegie Mellon went on a 5-1 run to claim the first set 25-20.
  • In the second set, after the Tartans took an early 5-1 lead, Myers and Emery Goerig recorded kills to cut the deficit to one. The Blue and White tied the set at 13, aided by a kill from Grace Mitchener and an Allie Buchholz service ace. The Generals then took a 22-21 lead after Mitchener recorded back-to-back kills. Myers added a pair of kills to help the Generals claim the set, evening the match at 1-1.
  • The Generals chipped away at the Tartans' 9-5 lead in the third set as Mitchener and Schellenberg delivered consecutive kills. The Tartans pushed ahead to a 16-13 lead, but the Generals responded with four unanswered points, taking a 17-16 lead after two Tartan attack errors and two kills from Mitchener. Tied at 20 after two attacking errors, the Blue and White rattled off five straight points to take the set 25-20. The final run featured kills from Myers, Mitchener, and Allison Young.
  • W&L started the fourth set strong with a 6-1 run, featuring kills from Mitchener and Schellenberg and a Buchholz service ace. Debiec recorded two kills to cap a 7-1 run, giving the Generals a 13-9 lead. A Schellenberg service ace extended the lead to 20-15, but the Tartans battled back with four unanswered points, ultimately taking the set 26-24.
  • The Generals jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the fifth set, fueled by three kills from Myers, one from Debiec, and a Schellenberg service ace. After a three-point swing by the Tartans, the Blue and White extended their lead to 8-4 with kills from Buchholz and Mitchener. The Tartans cut the deficit to two, but a Debiec kill and a Tartan attacking error sealed the five-set win for the Generals.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Laura Reichard led all players with 23 kills on 59 attempts, finishing with a .288 hitting percentage. Avery Myers led the Blue and White with 18 kills on 69 attempts for a .174 hitting percentage. Both Myers and Grace Mitchener recorded double-doubles in the win.
  • Neha Tummala posted a match-high 54 assists in the loss, while Allie Buchholz dished out a season-high 51 assists.
  • Vivi Vasquez recorded a career-high 42 digs in the win, breaking the single-match record for digs previously set in 2006 by Lauren Edmonson '07.
  • Buchholz and Emily Schellenberg each contributed two service aces, while Myers tied her career-high with five blocks.
 


HOW IT HAPPENED vs SALISBURY (W&L, 3-0 | 25-15, 25-17, 25-17)
  • The Blue and White kicked off the first set with five unanswered points, highlighted by three service aces from Allie Buchholz. Two kills from Grace Mitchener and one from Emily Schellenberg helped the Generals build a 17-10 lead late in the set. W&L claimed the first set 25-15 after a kill from Avery Myers and two Sea Gull service errors.
  • In the second set, the Generals and Sea Gulls traded points early, but a pair of kills from Mitchener and one from Riley Debiec sparked a four-point swing, putting the Blue and White up 7-2. W&L maintained a steady lead throughout, and after two more Mitchener kills, they extended the lead by seven. Debiec's kill gave the Generals a 23-16 lead before two Sea Gull errors secured a 25-17 set win.
  • The Sea Gulls took a 3-2 lead in the third set following kills from Kiley McTaggart and two W&L attacking errors. However, the Generals responded by taking a three-point lead with kills from Myers and Emery Goerig, along with a Schellenberg service ace. W&L then went on a 6-1 run to take an 11-5 lead, featuring two kills from Mitchener and one from Myers.
  • After some back-and-forth action, the Generals scored four unanswered points to extend their lead to 21-13, with Myers and Debiec each recording two kills during the run. Kills from Mitchener and Debiec capped off a 4-1 run, securing the sweep for the Generals.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Mitchener led the match with 17 kills on 45 attempts with a .267 hitting percentage. She also recorded her ninth straight double-double with 13 digs. Myers added 10 kills on 40 attempts for a .150 hitting percentage.
  • Allie Buchholz posted a match-high 29 assists in the win, along with 14 digs. Julie Altieri led the Sea Gulls with 24 assists.
  • Vivi Vasquez recorded a match-high 27 digs, while Grace Rail led the Sea Gulls with 19 digs.
  • Buchholz tallied three service aces in the win, while Mitchener and Schellenberg each contributed two.

W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals move to 9-0 on the season for the second straight year. As a team, the Blue and White recorded a .151 hitting percentage, averaging 13.4 kills per set.
  • Mitchener led the Generals with 34 kills on 128 attempts for a .148 hitting percentage across the two matches. Myers contributed 28 kills, while Debiec added 20 kills in the two wins.
  • Buchholz dished out 80 assists, averaging 10 assists per set, and led the team with five service aces. Vivi Vasquez recorded a team-high 69 digs over the two matches, averaging 8.63 digs per set.
