Volleyball Cruises Past Hollins in ODAC Opener

HOLLINS, Va. - The Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team kicked off Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Tuesday night, sweeping Hollins for their seventh-straight win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs HOLLINS (W&L, 3-0 | 25-20, 25-14, 25-13)
  • The Generals (7-0, 1-0 ODAC) quickly jumped out to a 4-0 lead, with kills from Allison Young and Alyssah McGuire, along with a service ace by Turi Trainor. Hollins (1-8, 0-1 ODAC) narrowed the Generals' lead to two after a kill from Alyssa Reed and a service ace by Rachel Hull. W&L then capitalized on a six-point swing, taking a 23-15 lead after two kills by Emily Schellenberg and several Hollins errors. A service error by Hollins closed out the first set, giving the Blue and White a 25-20 set win.
  • Hollins opened the second set with a 3-2 lead, but the Blue and White responded with seven unanswered points, taking a 9-3 lead. The run featured kills from Schellenberg and McGuire, along with two service aces by Maddie Weller. An eight-point swing late in the set extended the Generals' lead to 18-5, highlighted by kills from Caroline Natwick and Trainor. Schellenberg finished off the set with a kill from a Trainor assist, sealing a 25-14 win.
  • Schellenberg and Lexie Stone each recorded kills to start the third set, giving the Generals an early 6-1 lead. The Generals broke the set wide open with a ten-point run, taking a 21-8 lead. This run included kills from L. Stone and Diane Pierre-Louis, as well as two service aces from Emery Goerig. Goerig finished off the match with a kill from a Trainor assist, securing the Generals' seventh straight win of the season.
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Emily Schellenberg recorded the first double-double of her career, leading the match with a career-high 14 kills, 12 digs, and three service aces. Alyssa Reed of Hollins contributed nine kills on 28 attempts, achieving a .214 hitting percentage.
  • Lexie Stone posted a career-high six kills on eight attempts for a .750 hitting percentage, while also digging out six attacks.
  • Turi Trainor notched a career-high 27 assists in the win, adding three service aces and two kills. Rachel Hull led Hollins with 24 assists.
  • Schellenberg, Trainor, Stephanie Lynch, Emery Goerig, and Diane Pierre-Louis each led the match with two blocks, while Alyssah McGuire and Katie Stone each recorded one block.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals secured their 29th consecutive victory against Hollins, sweeping them for the fourth straight season. 
  • W&L recorded a season-high 11 service aces in the win and led in every team category, including kills (40) and blocks (6).
  • The Blue and White posted a match-high .406 hitting percentage in the third set, finishing with an overall hitting percentage of .340.

  • The Generals take a trip to Ashland, Va. for the Randolph-Macon Quad on Saturday. The Blue and White will face Carnegie Mellon University at 10 a.m. followed by Salisbury University at 12:30 p.m.
