Field Hockey Falls to No. 2 John Hopkins in Home Opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University field hockey team suffered a 5-1 defeat to second-ranked Johns Hopkins University on Sunday afternoon at W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (1-1) faced a tough challenge in their home opener, falling to the Blue Jays (2-0) in non-conference action.

Johns Hopkins established control early, netting a goal just 2:46 into the match and adding another at the 25:53 mark of the second quarter. W&L quickly responded less than two minutes later, with senior midfielder Jenna Bernstein scoring the Generals' lone goal at 27:22, assisted by sophomore Elaina Bellone, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

However, the Blue Jays regained momentum, scoring their third goal as the first half ended and adding two more in the second half to secure the victory.

The Generals' best chance for a second goal came at 55:05 when Bernstein fired a shot from the top of the scoring circle, but JHU defender Liz Falterer blocked it on the goal line, preventing the score.

HOW IT HAPPENED

2:46 – Johns Hopkins – Off the first corner awarded on Sunday, Jenna Halpin scored with an assist from Megan Chang to put the Blue Jays on the board.
25:53 – Johns Hopkins – Sophia Builione extended the lead after redirecting Ava Balacek's scoring attempt.
27:22 – W&L – Jenna Bernstein scored from the left side of the circle off an assist from Elaina Bellone, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
29:59 – Johns Hopkins – With less than eight seconds remaining in the second stanza JHU was awarded a penalty corner. Sophia Builione scored her second goal of the day, unassisted by collecting a loose ball from the first scoring attempt then burrying it into the back of the net. 
30:25 – Johns Hopkins – Zoya Iyer laid out on an cross from Emily Amsden and was able to redirect the ball enough to make the fourth score. 
59:16 – Johns Hopkins – Lila Slattery added a final goal, unassisted, to cap off the scoring.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Blue Jays outshot the Generals 16-15, with an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.
  • W&L earned 10 penalty corners compared to 11 for Johns Hopkins.
  • Julia McDonald made three saves in goal for W&L, while Aubrey Kilgore of Johns Hopkins recorded four.
  • Betty Boatwright led W&L with four shots, including one on goal.

The Generals are on the road next weekend with a trip to Danville, Kentucky. W&L will play Centre at Noon on Saturday, September 7, followed by a neutral site matchup against Rhodes at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
