MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team upset No. 12 Berry College (Ga.) before taking down Hardin-Simmons University at the Berry College Kick-off on the first day of the 2024 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs #12 BERRY (W&L, 3-2 | 17-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-13)
- The Generals (2-0) picked up their first win against the Vikings (0-1) since 2012. With the win, the Generals notched their first victory against a ranked opponent since they defeated 17th-ranked Eastern (Pa.) at the W&L Invitational in 2017.
- Berry found themselves with a two-set lead after claiming the first set 25-17 and the second set 25-19. The Vikings held the Generals' offense in check, limiting them to hitting percentages of 0.093 and 0.032 in the first two sets.
- After falling behind 10-4 in the third set, the Blue and White rallied back to tie the set at 12, following kills from Avery Myers, Ryan Taylor, and Grace Mitchener. The Vikings were the first team to reach 20 points in the set, but the Generals responded by scoring the final six points to secure a 25-20 win.
- Washington and Lee fell behind early again in the fourth set but took a 10-8 advantage following kills from Myers and Allie Buchholz, as well as a service ace from Penelope Quiles. Back-and-forth action kept the set tied at 17 before a three-point swing gave the Blue and White a 20-17 lead. The Vikings rallied back to within two points, but kills from Myers and Mitchener helped secure a narrow 25-23 win, forcing a fifth set.
- Heading into the final set with all the momentum, W&L held a 12-10 lead late, following kills from Taylor and Myers. Berry battled back from the two-point deficit, tying the game at 13 before Emery Goerig tallied the final two kills to secure the come-from-behind upset win.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Senior Avery Myers led all players with a career-high 19 kills on 71 attempts, achieving a .197 hitting percentage. Blakely Barnes led Berry with 14 kills on 30 attempts for a .433 hitting percentage.
- Lindsey MacDiarmid led all players with 49 assists, while Senior Allie Buchholz dished out 38 assists in the win.
- Kate Whittle of Berry led the match with 36 digs, while sophomore Vivi Vasquez dug out 23 attacks.
- Michener and Taylor had a match-high four blocks while Riley Debiec stuffed two Vikings attacks.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs HARDIN-SIMMONS (W&L, 3-1 | 25-22, 25-23, 15-25, 26-24)
- W&L secured their second win in program history against Hardin-Simmons, defeating the Cowgirls 3-1. In their last meeting, the Generals claimed a five-set match at the Southwestern Invitational in 2006.
- The first set began with both teams trading points before a pair of Mitchener kills gave the Generals an 8-4 lead. W&L maintained a steady advantage until a Generals' error and a Liz Underwood kill tied the set at 18. After falling behind 22-20, the Generals rattled off the set's final five points to take the opening frame.
- A five-point run, featuring kills from Mitchener, Myers, and Debiec, helped the Blue and White take an 11-8 lead early in the second set. The Generals and Cowgirls exchanged points until a Gabby Jones attacking error secured a narrow 25-23 set win for W&L.
- The Cowgirls came out strong in the third set, taking a dominant 20-9 lead. Ellie Carter closed out the set with a kill off of a Jacee Childers assist for a 25-15 win.
- Hardin-Simmons jumped out to a six-point lead in the fourth set before back-to-back kills from Mitchener and Turi Trainor halted their offensive run. Both teams traded points until Mitchener added a trio of kills to put the Generals up 22-20.Â
- With the match tied at 24 following a Gabby Jones kill, Mitchener recorded her final kill of the night to put the Generals up by one. The Blue and White picked up their second victory of the season as a Liz Underwood attacking error secured the 26-24 set win for W&L.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Myers and HSU's Gabby Jones and Liz Underwood led the match with 12 kills each. Mitchener added 11 kills in the win on 35 attempts for a .143 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz led all players with 24 assists while Turi Trainor dished out seven. Ali Meyer and Keatyn Rodgers both had double-digit assists for the Cowgirls, dishing out 18 and 16 assists, respectively.
- Vasquez dug out a match-high 19 attacks while Buchholz and Mitchener each had double-digit digs. Liz Underwood led Hardin-Simmons with 17 digs.
- HSU's Gabby Jones led the match with five blocks while Abbi Allen recorded four. Goerig led W&L with three blocks while four Generals each recorded one.
W&L GAME NOTES
- Myers led the Generals with 31 kills on 112 attempts for a .179 hitting percentage, averaging 3.44 kills per set. Mitchener recorded 26 kills on 77 attempts for a .117 hitting percentage across both matches.Â
- Buchholz dished out 62 assists across both matches, averaging 6.89 assists per set. Vasquez led the team with 42 digs while Mitchener, Buchholz, Myers and Quiles each had double-digit digs.Â
- As a team, the Generals recorded 101 kills on 342 attempts for a .358 hitting percentage, averaging 11.22 kills per set.Â
