Field Hockey Opens Up the 2024 Season with a 1-0 Win Over SMCM

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee University field hockey team secured a 1-0 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Friday evening at JLR Stadium.

The Generals (1-0) and the Seahawks (0-1) battled through a defensive first half, with neither team able to find the back of the net for nearly three complete quarters.

The game's only goal came in the third quarter when Betty Boatwright capitalized on a penalty corner for W&L. Sophomore Elaina Bellone was credited with the assist at the 43:46 mark to give W&L what would prove to be the game-winner on Friday night's season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • 43:46 – W&L – Betty Boatwright redirected a lifted shot from Elaina Bellone on the left side of the circle, dropping the ball into the over the heads of the defense and into the goal following a penalty corner.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Generals outshot the Seahawks 14-3, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • W&L Senior Kate Ruffin rattled off a a team-high six shots and Zoe Dolf added three more to the boxscore. 
  • W&L earned five penalty corners, compared to St. Mary's two.
  • Julia McDonald made two saves in goal for W&L to secure the shutout.
  • Caroline McDonald recorded four saves for the Seahawks.

The Generals will host No. 2 Johns Hopkins University at noon on Sunday, September 1, at W&L Turf Field.
