LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee University head women's basketball coach
Brittney Kemp has announced the addition of
Katie Garrish to the program's coaching staff. Garrish will begin her duties as an assistant coach on August 26.
"I am extremely excited to welcome Katie aboard," stated Kemp. "Her impressive career on the court paired with her eagerness to build relationships and support student-athletes will make her an invaluable addition to the W&L Women's Basketball Program."
Garrish is no stranger to the Lexington area, as she graduated from nearby Southern Virginia University in 2022 with a degree in business management and leadership. While at SVU, Garrish starred on the women's basketball team and finished as the program's second all-time leading scorer while leading the team to the first USA South Conference title in program history as a team captain.
"I am thrilled to join W&L as the new assistant women's basketball coach," Garrish commented. "This is an incredible opportunity to work with such a talented group of athletes and to contribute to the continued success of the program. I can't wait to get started and help achieve great things this season."
An exceptional post player, Garrish averaged 16.0 points per game in 102 games in her career, while shooting 52.8 percent from the floor. She was especially productive during her sophomore campaign when she posted career highs in scoring (17.6) and rebounding averages (14.0), and she even led Division III in blocks per game (3.5) and double-doubles (23).
In her time since graduating from Southern Virginia, Garrish has served as a Student Success Coach at Buena Vista Public Schools. Working most closely with students eighth to 12th grades, Garrish has been guiding and assisting student towards success both academically and personally, while tracking the success rates for those students.
Garrish and Kemp are both leading the Generals for the first year in 2024-25, with the team kicking the season off against Garrish's alma mater, SVU, on Monday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. in Holekamp Gym.
