LEXINGTON, Va. – The 19th-ranked Washington and Lee men's tennis team had its four-match winning streak snapped on Saturday after it dropped an 8-1 decision to No. 15 Johns Hopkins to start the Duchossois Tennis Invitational.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The lone W&L (6-2) team point came from the No. 1 singles position and senior
Evan Erb, who defeated nationally 26th-ranked Allen Gong. Erb dropped the first set, 4-6, but battled back with a 6-3 win in the second set. With the team result already having been decided, Erb and Gong went to a 10-point breaker to decide the winner, where Erb outscored Gong, 10-7.
First-year
Heys Parker and sophomore
Rider Yeaman were both on the brink of earning one team point each as well. Parker dropped his first set at No. 4 but rebounded with a 6-4 win in the second, before falling by a 6-4 score in the third to Hanyu Liu. Yeaman then fell in a 10-point break against Marco Azar at No. 6 after each player earned a 6-1 set win prior.
The Generals also nearly picked up a victory at No. 1 doubles, but Erb and junior
Will Kistler were topped, 8-7 (9-7), by Azar and Daniel Ardila.
