No. 23 Men’s Swimming Soars Past Southern Virginia, 175-45

LEXINGTON, Va. - The 23rd-ranked Washington and Lee University men's swimming team soared past Southern Virginia University, 175-45, on Friday evening at the W&L Natatorium. 

HIGHLIGHTS FROM MEET
  • The Generals (3-1) got back in the win column with a dominating victory over SVU, picking up their second-straight win over the Knights.
  • Charles Byars led the Generals with four total wins this evening, notching two solo wins while being a member of both winning relay teams. Byars kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle after clocking in a time of 1:44.62 before posting a winning time of 2:01.44 in the 200 backstroke. Byars then teamed up with Harrison Cerone, Matt Fritz and Baxter Smelzer in the 200 medley relay, the squad clocked in a winning time of 1:33.90 to finish in first place. Smelzer, Fritz, Byars and Dalton Jobe clocked in a time of 1:26.51 in the 200 freestyle relay to finish in first place as well.
  • Luke Nagel secured a solo win in the 1000 freestyle, posting a winning time of 10:16.35 before Jackson Brooks clocked in a time of 55.02s to finish in first place in the 100 backstroke. Jobe secured a top finish in the 100 breaststroke this evening, clocking in a time of 1:00.00.
  • Reese Nelson secured his third solo win of the season in the 200 butterfly, posting a winning time of 1:59.21 before Smelzer finished in first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.72s. Luke Osleger won his first event of the season, posting a winning time of 47.87s in the 100 freestyle.
  • Fritz earned his fourth solo win of the season after posting a winning time of 2:15.24 in the 200 breaststroke before Leighton Chapman won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:58.48. Payton Crawford locked up his first win of the season after posting a time of 53.69s in the 100 butterfly while John Ramos wrapped up the night with a win in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 1:59.30.

  • Select individuals will travel to Chicago, Ill. for the University of Chicago Shoot Out on Nov. 8-9. The two-day meet will kick off at 4 p.m. on Friday while kicking off the final day of action on Saturday 11 a.m.
