Zimmermans propel No. 20 W&L to seventh consecutive win

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 20th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team stormed back from an early deficit behind three combined goals from Sarah and Megan Zimmerman to take down Randolph-Macon, 4-1, to secure its seventh win in a row.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The lone Yellow Jackets (5-2-4, 2-1-0 ODAC) goal came in just the fifth minute when Lauren Brokaw sent a corner cross into the box, where Abigail Pesut headed the ball in, just under the crossbar.

W&L (7-1, 3-0 ODAC) shook the sluggish start, however, and equalized in the 23rd minute when sophomore Shay Bowman made a run into the box but was fouled on the left side. Junior Sydney Devory stepped up to take the shot and buried her shot into the low-right corner.

With the game knotted at one goal per side to start the second half, junior Sarah Zimmerman scored her third goal of the season, finishing on a through-ball from first-year Avery Hannah. Two minutes later, Zimmerman cushioned her team's lead with her fourth goal. An initial header attempt was thwarted at the goal line by a defender, but the rebound came right back to Zimmerman, who headed the back on goal and out of the reach of the defender.

The Yellow Jackets looked to make it a one goal game in the 88th minute, but a shot by Ally Spangler was blocked by junior Bryn Bissinger. The Generals turned immediately to attack, and they iced the game into the win column when sophomore Emily Burke assisted first-year Megan Zimmerman with 1:59 remaining.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Sarah Zimmerman finished the day with two goals scored and continually pressured the RMC goal with seven shots and four on goal. Megan Zimmerman's goal in the 89th minute was her fourth of the season, as well, while Devory's penalty-kick goal marked her first of the season. Junior goalkeeper Abby Groff played all 90 minutes of the game and made two saves.

Pesut's goal came on her only shot attempt of the game, while Brokaw was credited with an assist on the play and a shot in the game. RMC's goalkeeper Zoe Long prevented the score from becoming lopsided by making 10 saves in the game, including several diving stops.

NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
The Generals secured their seventh consecutive win on Saturday, which is their longest winning streak since capturing 10 straight wins during the 2021 spring season. W&L is outscoring its opponents by a 21-3 margin during the streak, and 21-4 overall this season.

W&L is unbeaten over the last 27 meetings against the Yellow Jackets, with their last loss in the series coming on October 23, 1999.

TEAM STATS:
The Blue and White ended the game with a 31-5 positive margin in total shots, with marks of 16-2 in the first half and 15-3 in the second half. W&L also earned 11 corner kicks on the day and conceded one.

UP NEXT:
The Generals will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Averett for a 6:00 p.m. opening kick against the Cougars.
