Football Week 7 Preview: Guilford

The Generals head to Greensboro, N.C. for their first road conference game of the season.

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University football teams goes on the road for the first time during the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) slate, traveling to Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday Oct. 19 for a 4 p.m. match up at Guilford College.

Series History:
This marks the 37th meeting in program history between the two institutions, with the Generals holding a 22-14 overall record over the Quakers. The Blue and White have won the last four meetings, marking the longest winning streak against Guilford since their first match up in 1965. The Generals are 7-3 against the Quakers in the last ten games, outscoring them 347-237.

Last season, the Blue and White rushed for 410 yards on their way to a 48-25 win at Wilson Field. They averaged 6.1 yards per carry on 67 rushes with seven touchdowns while controlling the ball for nearly 36 minutes. Jacob Romero led all rushers with 133 yards on 18 carries and one touchdown, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. Anthony Crawford added 87 yards on the ground with two touchdowns. Guilford's Bailey Baker completed 24 of 37 passes for a game-high 352 yards and three touchdowns. Adam Lacy posted a game-high 18 tackles, including 11 solo stops, while Nick Iannone recorded 11 tackles (three solo, eight assisted). Hunter Hawk '24 led the Generals' defense with nine tackles, while Jalen Todd and Will Mahmud each recorded a sack. Defensive back Jack Johnson intercepted Baker in the second quarter, leading to a Generals score.

Scouting the Quakers:

Guilford started the season with three straight wins over Greensboro (14-0), Methodist University (14-12), and Sewanee (44-35) during the non-conference slate. However, the Quakers have struggled in their first two ODAC games, losing 31-0 to Hampden-Sydney on Oct. 5 and 63-0 at No. 25 Randolph-Macon last Saturday. Against RMC, the Quakers managed just 151 yards of total offense, with 84 passing yards and 67 rushing yards, while allowing 608 total yards, including 475 on the ground. Quarterback Caleb Robles threw three interceptions, leading to three RMC scores, including a 41-yard pick-six by RMC's Collin Farmer in the second quarter.

Robles completed 10 of 23 passes for 84 yards and three interceptions, while leading the team with 54 rushing yards. Wide receiver JuJu Rice caught four passes for 34 yards, Jay Daniels added 26 receiving yards, and Drew Winkler contributed 17. Junior linebacker Eli Davis led the defensive efforts with 10 solo tackles and one tackle for loss, the only player to post double-digit tackles in the game. Zy'Quan Williams and Malik Hargrove combined for one tackle for loss.

Through five games this season, the Quakers have been outscored 141-72, averaging 14.4 points per game. Offensively, they are averaging 326.4 yards of total offense per game, with 187.6 rushing yards and 138.8 passing yards. Guilford has the third-best rushing offense and the sixth-best passing offense in the conference so far this season. Robles has played in all five games, completing 30 of 66 passes (45%) for 273 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions, averaging 91 passing yards per game. He has also added 120 rushing yards and one touchdown. Malik Woodard leads the rushing unit with 329 yards on 75 carries and two touchdowns, averaging 4.4 yards per carry and 65.8 yards per game. Evan Sullivan follows closely with 295 yards on 57 attempts, averaging 5.2 yards per rush and 59 yards per game. Jay Daniels has caught a team-high 17 passes for 256 yards, averaging 51.2 yards per game, while five other Quakers have caught touchdown passes this season.

The Quakers' defense has allowed an average of 372 yards per game, including 207 rushing yards per game. While Guilford ranks seventh in the ODAC in rushing defense, they lead the conference in passing defense (165.0 yards per game) and passing defense efficiency (97.1). Davis leads the defensive efforts with 33 total tackles, including 24 solo stops, five tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. He also has an interception, a forced fumble, and seven QB hurries this season. Avery Garner leads the Quakers with three sacks, adding 24 tackles and four tackles for loss. Tristan Bailey and Jaylan Richardson each have two interceptions, while Bailey leads the team with seven pass breakups.

Scouting the Generals:
The Blue and White are coming off a 28-26 win over Hampden-Sydney at Wilson Field during Hall of Fame Weekend. The Generals produced 291 yards of total offense, with 267 yards on the ground, scoring all four touchdowns through the run game. Despite the two-point victory, the Generals controlled the clock, holding the ball for 34 minutes, including a final nine-minute drive that sealed the win. W&L's defense played a pivotal role, forcing two fumbles that led to scores and limiting the Tigers' rushing attack to just 75 yards, their lowest of the season. This marked the third time this season that the defense held an opponent to under 100 rushing yards.

Jacob Romero, the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week, led the rushing efforts with a career-high 148 yards on 25 carries and three touchdowns, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. Marcus Payne added 53 yards and a touchdown on eight carries, while Anthony Crawford contributed 34 yards on the ground. Ian Evans had one catch for 13 yards, and Andrew Bland hauled in an 11-yard reception. Senior Jalen Todd, the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week, led the Generals' defense as he matched his career-high with 14 tackles and one tackle for loss. Brennan Stout continued his impressive rookie season with 10 tackles, marking his third consecutive game with double-digit stops. Mac Palmer and Jerzee Allentini each recorded a strip sack, leading to two of the Generals' four touchdowns.

The Generals have outscored their opponents 167-118 this season while averaging 393.4 yards of offense per game. W&L averages 79.6 passing yards per game and rushes for 313.8 yards, the fourth-best rushing average in Division III. They have scored 17 of their 24 touchdowns on the ground, adding five through the air. Sophomore quarterback Ty Collins is 33-of-55 (60%) for 398 yards, with five touchdowns and three interceptions, averaging 79.6 passing yards per game and adding 108 rushing yards and one score. Romero leads both the team and the ODAC with 511 yards on 85 carries and four touchdowns, averaging 6.0 yards per carry and 102.2 yards per game. Bland, Evans, and Josh Garcia are Collins' top three targets this season, combining for 291 yards on 24 receptions with two touchdowns.

Defensively, the Blue and White are allowing 359.8 yards per game but have been strong against the run, giving up just 135.2 rushing yards per game. Todd leads the team and conference with 50 total tackles (13 solo, 37 assisted), with three tackles for loss and one sack, averaging 10 tackles per game. Stout follows closely behind with 41 tackles, the fourth-most in the ODAC, along with two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Will Mahmud leads the team with six tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks, while seven other Generals have recorded at least one sack this season.

National Statistical Rankings: 
The Generals have the fourth-best rushing offense in the country, averaging 313.8 yards per game, and have ranked within the top five each week this season. The offense also ranks 32nd in Division III with a .650 fourth-down conversion rate, successfully converting 13 of their 25 attempts. Additionally, the Blue and White have the fifth-best punt return unit in Division III, averaging 25.67 yards per return.

Individually, the Blue and White have five student-athletes ranked within the top 50 in the national statistical rankings this season. Jacob Romero ranks 29th in Division III with 511 rushing yards and 34th in yards per carry at 6.01. Anthony Crawford is 35th in rushing touchdowns with six, the most by any General this season. On the defensive side of the ball, Jerzee Allentini ranks 18th in Division III in forced fumbles, averaging 0.40 per game. Jalen Todd has recorded 50 total tackles, ranking 24th nationally and leading the conference in tackles. Charlie Fleming rounds out the Generals in the national rankings, ranking 40th in passes defended with six pass breakups, averaging 1.4 breakups per game


Around the ODAC:
Week six featured four blowout wins and a nail-biter for conference schools. Bridgewater posted a 63-7 win at home over Averett, scoring more than 40 points for the third time this season. No. 25 Randolph-Macon scored nine touchdowns and racked up 610 yards of offense en route to a 63-0 shutout win over Guilford, while Shenandoah moved to 1-1 in league play with a 42-20 rout of Ferrum. W&L and Hampden-Sydney played the closest game of the weekend, with the Blue and White securing a 28-26 win over the Tigers.
