No. 14 Women’s Volleyball Drops Midweek Match Against CNU, 3-1

LEXINGTON, Va. - The 14th-ranked Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team dropped their second-straight match of the season, falling to Christopher Newport University, 3-1, on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT (CNU, 3-1 | 25-23, 22-25, 17-25, 23-25)
  • Christopher Newport (15-7) came out strong in the first set, recording three straight kills to take a 3-0 lead. The Generals (19-2, 8-0 ODAC) responded with a 5-1 run to take a one-point lead, featuring four kills from Avery Myers and one from Emily Schellenberg. After back-and-forth action, the Generals went on a 6-3 run to take a 16-13 lead, highlighted by three consecutive kills from Emery Goerig. Back-to-back kills from Grace Mitchener and Schellenberg gave the Blue and White a 23-18 lead, but the Captains used a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to one. Myers finished off a Buchholz assist to help the Generals claim the first set 25-23.
  • After Myers notched the first kill of the second set, CNU rattled off three straight points to take a 3-1 lead. Two consecutive errors by the Captains sparked a 5-1 run for the Generals, with Mitchener registering a pair of kills and Myers adding one. Another 6-1 run for W&L extended their lead to 14-8, but the Captains responded with a 7-2 run to cut the Generals' lead to one. A late Mitchener kill gave the Generals a 20-19 lead, but CNU's final 6-1 run secured a 25-22 win in the second set.
  • In the third set, both teams traded points until the Captains used a 4-1 run to take an 11-7 lead. CNU regained momentum a few points later, rattling off four straight points to take a 15-9 lead. Two kills from Riley Debiec and one from Buchholz cut the CNU lead to five, but the Captains got two kills from Avery Hanly to extend their lead to 21-14. Back-to-back kills from Goerig and Lexie Stone narrowed the lead, but CNU capped off the set with a 3-0 run to take a 2-1 set lead.
  • The Captains carried their momentum into the fourth set, scoring seven straight points to jump out to an 8-3 lead. Two CNU errors briefly slowed their momentum, but they responded with three more points to take a 14-6 lead. The Captains held a 21-12 lead at one point in the set, but the Generals fought back with a 9-1 run, bringing the score to 22-21 in favor of CNU. The rally included kills from Mitchener, Myers, and Goerig, a Mitchener service ace, and a block by Buchholz and Goerig. Back-to-back attack errors by Hanly tied the set at 23, but an Alli Pratt kill and a Myers attacking error sealed the upset win for the Captains.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Alyssa Dozier of CNU led the match with 17 kills on 37 attempts, posting a match-high .432 hitting percentage. Three other Captains recorded double-digit kills in the win. Grace Mitchener led the Blue and White with 13 kills on 43 attempts for a .140 hitting percentage.
  • Allie Buchholz led all players with a match-high 37 assists, marking her 14th match with 30 or more assists this season. Alyssa Vitale led CNU with 32 assists, while Kensie Price added 19.
  • Vivi Vasquez posted a match-high two service aces while digging out 28 attacks. Mitchener and Buchholz also recorded double-digit digs. Noelle Starr led the match with 32 digs and added four assists.
  • CNU's Kyla McIntyre posted a match-high eight total blocks, while Dozier and Alli Pratt recorded six and five blocks, respectively. Emery Goerig led the Generals with two total blocks.
W&L GAME NOTES
  • The Generals dropped their second straight match of the season, falling to 19-2. The loss marks their tenth consecutive defeat to CNU, bringing the all-time series to 15-23 in favor of the Captains.
  • The Blue and White led in one team category on Wednesday night, tallying four service aces compared to CNU's three. The Generals recorded 50 kills on 186 attempts with 27 errors, resulting in a .124 hitting percentage, their lowest of the season.
  • W&L dug out 91 attacks in the loss, while dishing out 44 assists and registering three blocks.
