Field Hockey Marches Past Centre, 1-0

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey team defeated Centre College 1-0 in the final non-conference matchup of the season

Centre (3-4) did an excellent job fending off the Generals (3-4) flurry of shots on goal throughout the afternoon but one strike was able to make its way through the Colonel's defense in the second quarter to seal the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Generals forced a penalty corner and finally connected on the set piece after struggling in the early part of the season.
  • Kate Ruffin inserted the ball to the top of the scoring circle to first-year Zoe Dolfis who took a direct shot after the clean reception at the 17:47 mark.
  • The Blue and White continued to pound the ball into the attacking end and fired off 33 shots, 16 on target, a season-high in both categories.
  • Centre's goalie, Carlie McKenry, made 13 stops and defender Abby Brainard made a pair of defensive saves to keep the Colonel's in the game.
  • W&L's defense kept Centre out of the attacking third for a majority of the game.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The W&L defense conceded just two shots, one of which was on target, a Claire Martin attempt.
  • Meghan Speth took the second shot but it was wide of the cage.
  • W&L was awarded 12 penalty corners compared to Centre's two, both of which came in the second half.
  • The Generals outshot the Colonels 33-2.
  • Abby Long and Julia McDonald combined for the shutout; McDonald needed to make one stop in her thirty minutes of action.
  • Betty Boatwright recorded a game-high seven shots and Zoe Dolfis added six.
  • Maddy Duggleby and Margaret Cover combined for eight opportunities on goal, most of which were point-blank range and halted by McKenry's stellar play.

SERIES HISTORY

The Generals are 4-3 in series history with Centre. In Danville, Ky. last season, W&L defeated Centre 2-0 and McKenry matched her play with 14 stops last season.
