Field Hockey Celebrates Seniors with 4-1 Win Over Bridgewater

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey celebrated the program's eight seniors with an ODAC victory over Bridgewater College 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals (4-4, 1-0 ODAC) used a pair of goals in the first stanza to fly past the Eagles (2-5, 0-1) in the first league matchup of the year.

Honored before the contest were seniors Abby Long, Emma Gatrell, Allison Pitts, Claire Richey, Paige Mammorella, Jenny Lerner, Ally Hoffmann and Shelby Miller. The eight seniors played the full first quarter to put the Blue and White ahead with a 2-0 advantage before the offense scored the third goal in the second and final tally in the third stanza.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Generals needed just two minutes and 13 seconds to strike first. The Generals were awarded a free hit outside the circle; Emma Gatrell played the ball back to Ally Hoffman who found Zoe Dolfis at the top of the scoring area. Dolfis dribbled through three defenders and fired a shot inside. The ball went in the net untouched for the first tally of the day.
  • Dolfis created an opportunity to attack on the right side of the goal; her shot had a limited angle and was stopped by Bridgewater's keeper. Allison Pitts then collected the free ball and buried it past the goal line.
  • A pair of seniors connected for the Generals' third goal via a penalty corner. Kate Ruffin inserted the ball to Emma Gatrell who sent a hard shot inside the circle. A Paige Mamorella tip put the ball high out of the keepers' reach for another W&L tally.
  • Betty Boatwright registered the final Blue and White goal of the game in the third quarter. Boatwright dribbled parallel to the endline and snuck her shot past the BC keeper.
  • The Bridgwater tally came off Meredyth Rankin penalty corner insert to Bekah Mercer and brought the score to 4-1.
