Field Hockey Drops 2-0 Contest at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey team fell 2-0 to the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday night. 

UMW (5-2) used goals in the second and third quarters to defeat W&L (2-4) in the non-conference matchup. 


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Eagles controlled possession in the opening half but didn't find the back of the net until the 24th minute. 
  • Grayson Scott chipped her shot over the defenders into the upper right corner from the left side of the scoring circle. Emma Bernard was credited with the assist. 
  • At 38:54 Grayson Scott collected a loose ball off a rebounded save and fed Paige Stewart. Stewart's tap-in provided an insurance goal for the Eagles.
  • The Generals were able to create some opportunities inside the scoring area in the final quarter and recorded three shots. 
  • W&L was awarded two penalty corners in the second half, one in the third and fourth quarter, but weren't able to convert them into shots on goal. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • UMW outshot W&L 11-5
  • Mary Washington owned a 5-2 advantage in penalty corners. 
  • Sophomore Julia McDonald made six stops in 30 minutes of action. 
  • Sydney Baggett recorded two shots and the Generals' only shot on target.
  • Bernard took a game-most three shots. 

SERIES HISTORY

The Generals are 6-12 in series history against the Eagles. UMW avenged an 8-0 loss to W&L during the 2022 campaign.
