Volleyball Improves to 4-0 at Gettysburg Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Heading into the second day of the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic with a 2-0 record, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball took down Penn State-Mont Alto and Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in six straight sets to get off to their best start since the 2021 spring season. 

HOW IT HAPPENED vs PENN STATE-MONT ALTO
  • Lillie Holcomb kicked off a 8-0 stretch for the Generals as she buried her attack while Emery Goerig recorded two kills later in the run to give W&L an 11-5 lead. 
  • Both teams traded points until Riley Debiec finished off a Allie Buchholz assist and Holcomb recorded two service aces to put the Generals' up 20-11. 
  • After a kill by Gracie Vaughn of Penn St.-Mont Alto, the Generals went on a four point swing which featured kills by Ryan Taylor and Avery Myers and a service ace from Penelope Quiles.
  • After a Quiles service error, Alyssah McGuire finished off an Allie Buchholz to give the Generals a 25-13 win in the first frame. 
  • Penn St.-Mont Alto jumped out to a 2-1 lead in set two but after kills by Myers and Goerig as well as another service ace from Quiles, the Generals took a 7-2 lead. 
  • After a kill by Penn St.-Mont Alto's Gracie Vaughn, the Generals went on a four point swing to take a 25-17 set two win. The four point stretch featured a Mitchener service ace and a kill from McGuire. 
  • The third set was tightly contested as Penn St.-Mont Alto fended off the Generals attack to keep a one point lead until a costly attack error opened a window for the Blue and White. Goerig helped W&L take the lead for the first time in the set with a service ace while Taylor and Mitchener blocked an Abigail Wagner attack. 
  • Penn St.-Mont Alto knotted the set at 14 as Gracie Vaughn and Mackenzie Ginder each recorded kills while Vaughn also had a service ace. 
  • Following a service error by Mont Alto, Goerig and Mitchener both finished off a Buchholz assist to produce a six point swing to give W&L a 20-14 lead. 
  • Michener tallied two more kills later in the set to bring the Generals to match point and Stephanie Lynch sealed the deal for the Generals as they defeated Mont Alto in three straight sets. 

W&L GAMES NOTES
  • Goerig led W&L with eight kills on 14 attempts for a team-high .500 hitting percentage in three sets played. Myers recorded seven kills on 23 swings for a .305 hitting percentage. 
  • Buchholz dished out 28 assists while digging out four of Mont Alto's attacks.
  • Goerig led all players with seven blocks while Myers and Buchholz each recorded four blocks. 
  • Quiles dug out 11 attacks in her three sets of action while McKenna Cook recorded seven digs. 

PENN STATE GAME NOTES
  • Gracie Vaughn led all players with 11 kills on 18 swings for a .500 hitting percentage. Elizabeth Trella tallied nine kills on 27 attempts for a .111 hitting percentage. 
  • Kylie Denlinger dished out 30 assists which led all players while recording eight digs.
  • Brooke Denlinger led all players with 16 digs while Leslie Huckle, Gabby Baughman, Candance Somau each had five digs. 
 


W&L GAME NOTES vs RIT
  • The Generals moved to 4-0 on the season, their best start since the 2021 spring season, as they defeated Rochester Institute of Technology in three straight sets. 
  • Sydney Heifner posted a double-double as she led the Generals with ten kills while digging out 12 Tigers' attacks. 
  • Goerig ranked second in kills, recording seven in three sets of action. 
  • Buchholz, Heifner and Goerig each recorded two service aces while Debiec and Cook each had one. 
  • Buchholz dished out 30 assists for the second time this season, she also recorded ten digs in three sets of action. 

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Goerig produced a season-high eight kills and tied a career-best with seven blocks in the 3-0 win over Penn State-Mont Alto. She recorded 15 kills today while bringing her season total to 22. 
  • Buchholz dug out 34 attacks Saturday afternoon, bringing her season total to 63. 
  • Quiles posted a season-high 11 digs in the 3-0 win over Penn State-Mont Alto.
  • Heifner and Debiec were named to the All-Tournament team which was voted upon by the tournament's head coaches.
