LEXINGTON, Va. - Playing at home for the sixth-straight match, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team dropped their first match of the season as they fell in straight sets to Christopher Newport University on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One | 26-24 CNU
- The Captains wasted no time on the offensive attack as Samantha Dorn recorded back-to-back kills to help CNU gain a 4-0 lead to start the set.
- Down 16-12, the Generals fed off of the crowd's energy to take a 20-16 lead late in the set. The eight point swing featured kills from Emery Goerig, Avery Myers, Riley Debiec and Sydney Heifner as well as a service ace from Debiec.
- W&L's lead quickly shrunk as Alyssa Dozier recorded four kills which helped put CNU up 25-24. Simara Alexander closed out the first frame with a kill to give the visitors a 26-24 win.
- Dozier led all players with eight kills on 12 attempts for a .667 hitting percentage. Sammy Carroll of CNU dished out 17 assists while digging out four attacks.
- Heifner led the Generals with six kills on 14 attempts for a .357 hitting percentage. Myers and Goerig each had three kills in the first set as well, both hitting .333.
Set Two | 25-20 CNU
- After CNU jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Goerig kicked off a four point swing by finishing off an Allie Buchholz assist to put the Generals up 4-2.
- Both teams went back and forth for a while before Heifner recorded two kills to give the Generals another four point swing which gave them a 15-14 lead.
- After a Phoebe Adams service error, the Captains scored six unanswered points to flip the match. Sammy Carroll, Kyla McIntyre, and Alyssa Dozier helped CNU take a 22-16 lead.
- Despite cutting the CNU lead to four, Dozier put the game away as she finished off a Sammy Carroll assist to claim the second set, 25-20.
- Dozier led all players once again as she had eight kills on ten attempts for a .800 hitting percentage while Kyla McIntyre had three kills for a .400 hitting percentage.
- Debiec led W&L with four kills on ten attempts, Heifner recorded three kills on seven attempts for a .429 hitting percentage.
Set Three | 25-17 CNU
- The third set was tightly contested early as both teams traded points but the Captains extended their lead to four as a Dozier kill and Carroll service ace sent them on a three point run.
- After Dozier and Dorn both recorded kills and an attack error by the Generals, CNU's lead extended to six after their second three point swing in three points.
- The Captains claimed the third and final frame off a service error by W&L, taking the set 25-17.
- Dorn of CNU and Heifner each had five kills in the third set to lead all players. Heifner had ten attempts and a .400 hitting percentage while Dorn had a .273 hitting percentage.
- Carroll dished out a set-high 12 assets while Buchholz dished out eight.
- Julia Gleason had a set-high six digs in the third frame.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals (9-1, 1-0 ODAC) lost their first match of the season.
- As a team they had 36 kills on 104 attempts for a .240 hitting percentage, the second set they hit .229 for a match high.
CNU GAME NOTES
- The Captains (3-5, 0-0 CAC) bounced back from a 3-2 loss against #10 Berry College (Ga.).
- CNU now holds a 21-15 all-time series lead over the Generals while winning the last eight appearances between the two schools.
- CNU had 51 kills on 107 attempts for a .355 hitting percentage while leading every team category.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Alyssa Dozier of CNU recorded a career-high 20 kills on 27 attempts for a .741 hitting percentage. Her hitting percentage is the second best in a single-match this season in Division III.
- The Captain's Setter, Sammy Carroll, recorded a double-double in tonight's match. She dished out 44 assists while digging out 11 W&L attacks.
- Hefner recorded 14 kills on 31 attempts for a season-best .387 hitting percentage. Myers and Debiec each had seven kills on 20 attempts while Myers had a .250 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz recorded her sixth double-double of the season as she dished out 29 assists while digging out ten attacks. Penelope Quiles also dug out ten CNU attacks while tallying a service ace.
UP NEXT
- The Generals close out their home slate with a Tuesday night tilt against Hollins University in their second conference match. The first serve is set for 6:30 p.m. inside Holekamp Gym.
