No. 16 Field Hockey Drops 1-0 Contest at Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio - Denison University defeated the No. 16 Washington and Lee field hockey team 1-0 in a non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon. 

The Generals (1-3) struggled to connect in the offensive circle after the Big Red (1-2) scored in the 10th minute of the game. 


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • W&L recorded three penalty corners in the first eight minutes of the game but it was Denison's Tabitha Chandler who scored first. 
  • The DU goal was the result of a penalty corner and Kristin Kelley set Chandler up for the lone goal. 
  • The Generals pulled Julia McDonald from the cage with 2:26 left to play to add an extra field player in hopes of breaking through a stout Denison defense. 
  • W&L was awarded a penalty corner in the 59th minute but the shot went wide right.


BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Generals outshot the Big Red 9-5 with four W&L attempts on frame.
  • Denison's keeper, Athena Joannou made four saves for the home team.
  • Abby Long and McDonald split time in the goal for W&L, McDonald recorded two stops.
  • Washington and Lee had nine penalty corners awarded compared to Denison's two. 

SERIES HISTORY

Denison has a 5-2 advantage over the Generals in series' history. The last matchup saw W&L win 3-0 in 2021.
