Women’s Volleyball Scores Pair of Wins at Gettysburg Battlefield Classic

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Taking a road trip to Pennsylvania to kick off the 2023 season, the Washington and Lee volleyball team picked up a pair of wins at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic as they swept York College of Pennsylvania 3-0 before taking down the Bullets of Gettysburg College 3-1 to notch their first two wins of the season. 


HOW IT HAPPENED vs YORK
  • The Generals claimed the match's first three points but York stormed back to take a 12-7 lead in the first set. The Generals cut the lead to 15-13 in favor of the Spartans as Sydney Heifner recorded two kills and one service ace. 
  • After some back and forth action, Washington and Lee rattled off six straight points from three attack errors, blocks by Heifner, Diane Pierre-Louis and Ryan Taylor and a kill by Heifner to take a 24-23 lead. 
  • Another attack error by the Spartans gave the Generals a 26-24 win in set one. 
  • The Spartans came out firing in the second set, taking a three point lead before Riley Debiec and Ryan Taylor blocked a Jennifer Taylor attack to bring the score to 3-2. 
  • W&L took command of the second set as they went on a 9-1 run which saw kills from Debiec and Emery Goerig while McKenna Cook recorded two service aces to give the Generals a 12-6 lead.
  • Following a kill from Yorks' Abby Diehl, Allie Buchholz and Taylor helped the Generals take a 20-8 lead as they shut down two attacks from Gianna Krinock. 
  • Both teams traded points but the Generals would take the second set 25-13 as Alyssa Mott couldn't connect on her serve attempt. 
  • Two service aces from Heifner and two kills from Debiec put W&L up 5-3 in the third set
  • Goerig shut down a Morgan Nolte attack attempt which set up a four point swing in favor of the Generals. 
  • Both teams pressured one another until a Debiec kill kicked off a five point stretch which featured kills from Lillie Holcomb and Hefiner as well as a service ace from Cook. 
  • Just like the second set, the Generals won the third and final set as Lilly Morton's serve attempt was off the mark to give the Generals a 25-12 win. 

W&L GAMES NOTES
  • With the win, the Generals have improved their all-time record against York to 3-0 while sweeping the Spartans in all three matches. 
  • Heifner led the Generals with eight kills and a .238 hitting percentage. Debiec finished the match with seven kills while Holcomb recorded five. 
  • Buchholz recorded a team-high 18 assists while Cook dished out five. 
  • Taylor led the team with seven total blocks, one solo and six assisted. Debiec and Buchholz each finished with three total blocks 
  • Cook led all players with 17 digs in three sets while Heifner and Holcomb each dug out seven Spartans' attacks. 
  • Washington and Lee landed 25 kills against 8 errors over 71 swings, good for a .239 hitting percentage. 

YORK GAME NOTES
  • Gianna Krinock led all scorers with ten kills in the match while recording 35 total attempts. Morgan Notle recorded seven kills while Megan Holmes had five kills in three sets of action. 
  • Abby Diehl dished out 21 assists in the match while Lilly Morton and Alyssa Mott each had one. 
  • Morton dug out nine of the Generals' attacks while Krinock recorded six digs. 
  • York landed 25 kills against 20 errors over 99 swings, for a .051 hitting percentage. 


HOW IT HAPPENED vs GETTYSBURG
  • After back and forth action, W&L gave themselves a 10-5 lead as Goerig and Hefiner both recorded kills while Goerig swatted down a Kylie Ulrich attack. 
  • The Bullets scored seven unanswered points to retake the lead 12-10 with kills from Ulrich, Brooke Lauletta and Mary Huegel. 
  • Gettysburg went on a seven point stretch to claim the first frame 25-16. 
  • W&L kicked off the second set with a 7-1 run that featured a kill from Debiec and multiple errors by the Bullets. 
  • The Bullets tied the set at ten after scoring four unanswered points but the Generals took an 18-14 lead as Avery Myers and Taylor each recorded kills. 
  • After falling behind 22-21, Heifner finished off two Buchholz assists to help the Generals score four of the final five points to claim set two 25-23. 
  • The Blue and White fell behind 4-2 in the third set by a service ace from Buchholz and three kills from Debiec gave the Generals a 7-4 lead. 
  • Both teams traded points until the Generals offense found its footing once again. Debiec recorded two more kills while Buchholz picked up her second ace of the set, giving the Generals a 19-12 lead. 
  • The Bullets cut the lead to two as they rattled off five unanswered points from four W&L attack errors and a kill from Huegel. 
  • Goerig closed out the third frame as she finished off a Buchholz assist to give the Blue and White a 25-22 win. 
  • The fourth set saw a lot of back and forth action but the Bullets found themselves with a 14-12 lead after three straight kills from Ulrich, Gianna Galli and Halle Feth.
  • The Generals took the lead a few points later as Myers and Buchholz each recorded kills but the Bullets quickly went back up by two with a three point stretch of their own. 
  • Heifner and Buchholz knotted the match at 18 with two more kills but Heifner would give the Generals the lead with her fifth kill of the match. 
  • Back-to-back kills from Heifner gave W&L a 23-20 advantage and Debiec would earn the final kill to give the Generals a 3-1 win over Gettysburg. 

W&L GAME NOTES
  • W&L starts their season 2-0 for the first time since 2021. 
  • Debiec led the Generals with 15 kills while Heifner recorded 13 kills. 
  • Buchholz led all players with 33 assists while Cook and Penelope Quiles each had three assists. 
  • Taylor led the team with three total blocks in four sets. Holcomb stuffed two attacks in two sets. 
  • Buchholz dug out 25 Gettysburg attacks to lead all players. Heifner recorded 22 digs while Cook posted 14 digs. 
  • Washington and Lee landed 45 kills against 25 errors over 172 swings, good for a .116 hitting percentage. 

GETTYSBURG GAME NOTES
  • Kylie Ulrich posted a team high 16 kills for the Bullets while Brooke Lauletta and Catherine Holtz each record eight kills. 
  • Sophie Nasir led the Bullets with 20 assists while Halle Feth dished out 18 assists in four sets. 
  • Mary Huegel stuffed nine W&L attacks in four sets while Holtz and Galli each had four blocks. 
  • Chelsea O'Leary dug out 23 W&L attacks while Lauletta recorded 21 digs. 

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Debiec posted a career-high 15 kills in the 4-1 win over Gettysburg. She recorded 22 kills for a .176 hitting percentage. 
  • Buchholz recorded two new career-highs as she posted 25 digs and 33 assists in the Generals win over Gettysburg. She recorded 29 digs and 51 assists in the Generals' two wins today. 
  • Cook dug out 31 attacks in today's games while recording four service aces and eight assists. 
  • Taylor stuffed ten attacks in both games for 1.43 blocks per set.

  • The Generals return to the court tomorrow afternoon as they take on Penn State Mont Alto at 1 p.m. on the second day of the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic.
