5/19/2023 9:52:00 PM

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The ninth-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team will face-off against No. 2 Salisbury in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament in Salisbury, Md. on Saturday at noon in the teams' 12th all-time meeting.

W&L is 18-4 overall this season and earned their spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals after wins over Centre (21-10) and Grove City (13-10) last weekend in Lexington. The Generals will be making their first appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals since 2004, when they dropped a 15-6 decision against Salisbury. The team's 18 wins are already a single-season program record, and the Generals ride into Sea Gull Stadium on Saturday on a 12-game winning streak, tied for fifth-longest in program history.

In their 11 all-time meetings, Salisbury owns seven wins, with the most recent matchup favoring the Sea Gulls, 7-4, on May 11, 2013, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Generals' last win against Salisbury came earlier that same season, a 7-6 win in Salisbury on February 20.

W&L owns one of the nation's top offenses with the third-most goals (394) and the sixth-best scoring average (17.9 goals/game). Additionally, the Blue and White offense ranks second in clear percentage (0.908), fourth in assists per game (12.1), fifth in points per game (30.0) and sixth in average scoring margin (9.32).

The Generals are led into the game by 2023 ODAC Coach of the Year Gene McCabe and All-ODAC First Team selections in seniors Hudson Pokorny (Darien, Conn. / Darien) and Harris Hubbard (Madison, Miss. / Highland Park (Texas)) and junior Will Bou (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon). Pokorny leads the high-powered offense with 107 points this season on 49 goals and 58 assists, and he has already broken the program's single-season assist (45) and points (90) records, as well as the ODAC single-season mark (53).

Hubbard anchors a strong W&L defensive unit, and he added Honorable Mention All-America honors from USA Lacrosse Magazine last week as well. Now with three straight All-ODAC First Team citations, Hubbard leads the team and is tied for second in the conference with 32 caused turnovers this season to go along with 44 ground balls. Hubbard has appeared in all 22 games for the Blue and White and has caused at least one turnover in 19 contests, with multiple in seven.

Bou made his first all-conference appearance this season after having taken over 61 percent of the team's face-off chances this season. Bou has won 252-of-404 battles at the X in 2023 for a 0.624 winning percentage to go along with a team-high 95 ground balls. Bou has the second-highest face-off winning percentage in the conference and his 95 ground balls are good for seventh.

In net, senior Warren Seeds (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) has proved himself as a top goalkeeper in the ODAC. He claimed a third team all-conference nod this week but enters play with the best goals-against average (7.83) in the conference and a 0.559 save percentage.

Despite winning the Coastal Lacrosse Conference title, the Sea Gulls (20-1) needed an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship following their 9-4 win over Christopher Newport in the title game. They then defeated Colorado College, 18-10, in the NCAA Second Round, followed by a 14-10 win over Amherst the next day in the Round of 16.

The Salisbury offense is led by the one-two punch of Cross Ferrara and Jude Brown. Ferrara, the 28th overall pick in the 2023 Premier Lacrosse League Draft to the Chrome Lacrosse Club, is tied for the second-most goals in Division III this season at 77, plus 30 assists for a total of 107 points, while Brown has 95 points on 61 assists and 34 goals. Ferrara is also a First Team USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American and the 2023 CLC Player of the Year.

Blake Malamphy has been Salisbury's top face-off player this season, taking 283 and winning 169 for a 0.597 winning percentage. John DeFazio and Zach Timmons anchor the defensive unit with 53 and 48 caused turnovers, respectively, and Nicholas Ransom has held down goalkeeping duties with an 8.12 goals-against average in 856:57 this season.

Should the Generals advance to the NCAA Semifinals on Sunday at 3:00 pm, they would face the winner of Saturday's 3:00 pm contest between the No. 4 Christopher Newport Captains and the sixth-ranked Dickinson Red Devils. W&L and CNU have matched up 11 times in their histories, with the most recent being a 16-11 Captains win on March 22 this season. The Generals and Red Devils have four all-time meetings, with the Generals holding the series edge at 3-1. The two teams last matched up on May 12, 2018, in a narrow 10-9 Dickinson win.

The Captains have made their way into the quarterfinals with wins over Hope (17-9) and Gettysburg (17-12) during the first weekend of tournament play. Their offense features four players with 70 points or more, led by Andrew Cook (61g, 28a) with 89 and Alex Brendes (56g, 31a) with 87. Warner Cabaniss leads the CNU face-off efforts as the only player on the team with 100 or more attempts. He has won 289-of-426 face-offs this season for a 0.678 winning percentage to earn USA Lacrosse Magazine All-America Honorable Mention laurels this season.

Ryan Young, a First Team All-American, leads the defense with 44 caused turnovers plus 54 ground balls to Burke Widhelm's 38 ground balls and 29 caused turnovers. Zac Hanway has started all 20 of CNU's games between the pipes, and he has posted a 9.57 GAA on a 0.553 save percentage.

Rounding out this weekend's teams is the Dickinson, who won the Centennial Conference and moved past John Carroll (19-3) and Stevens (12-10) in the first two games of the NCAA Tournament. Led by Skyler Schluter and James Isaacson on offense, Schluter has 68 points this season on 27 goals and 41 assists, while Isaacson leads the team with 42 goals to go along with 18 assists for 60 points.

On face-offs, John McKee has won 278-of-435 battles at the X this season for a 0.639 winning percentage. Evan Karetsos leads the team with 30 caused turnovers, plus 47 ground balls, while Cole Schwartz has caused 30 turnovers and has scooped up 51 ground balls. The Red Devils bring the Centennial Conference Defender of the Year to the site this weekend in goalkeeper Chris Brandau. He owns an 8.95 GAA in 20 games an 1,146:28 of action, with a 0.545 save percentage.

The two winning teams from Saturday's games will face-off at Sea Gull Stadium on Sunday at 3 p.m. with a trip to the NCAA Championship game on the line. Live stats and video will be provided for all three games this weekend.
