Bats Boom Against Mary Baldwin, Generals Win 10-4

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team bested the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrel in the final non-conference game of the season, 10-4 on Thursday night.
The Generals (16-15) entered the bottom of the third leading by a thin margin of 4-3 but drilled out a five-run frame that launched W&L to a win over the Fighting Squirrels (4-31).

Junior catcher Jaden Keuhner (
Aldie, Va./John Champe) opened the third with a single, followed by a stolen base, and became the first scored run thanks to a fielder's choice by senior designated hitter John Raymond (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional). A walk by sophomore right fielder Frankie Maloof (Atlanta, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) and first-year third baseman Nick Lagges (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) loaded the bases for the top of the order. The two seniors; center fielder Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) and left fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) went back-to-back with devastating hits. Salvino shot a line drive up the middle and brought two runs across the plate. Perkins followed with a one-hopper to the wall in deep right to clear the bases and brought in the Generals' ninth run.
MBU scored the initial run of the game with a first-inning single by sophomore first baseman Tyler Morley to score senior designated hitter Noah Kessler. Mary Baldwin ended the night with 13 hits but only plated three more runs in the game, two in the third and a tally in the seventh.
W&L banged out with 12 hits, drew eight walks and struck out just once in 36 at-bats. Salvino led the Generals at the plate with a 4-for-5 performance that batted in three runs and scored three times. Perkins, Keuhner, and Raymond also posted multi-hit days and totaled four RBI between the three. Maloof reached base four times on five plate appearances; he drew walks three times and singled in the second.
For Mary Baldwin, Morley matched Salvino's 4-for-5, but could only bring home one run, three players combined for six hits and three runs batted in for MBU.
Sophomore pitcher Campbell Charneco (2-1) (Clifton, Va./Centreville) earned the win after throwing the first three innings. Brody Pasieka (Cream Ridge, N.J./Hun School of Princeton) came in for 3.2 innings of strong relief, the first-year allowed just one run and struck out two. Senior Stewart Long (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) and sophomore Ben Wechsler (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) combined for a hitless final 2.1 innings to close out the game on the rubber. Fighting Squirrels junior pitcher Ty Webster (0-9) received the loss after a two-inning, four-run (three earned) performance.
The Generals return to the field this Saturday to host Virginia Wesleyan in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. The Blue and White will celebrate the Five seniors that make up the Class of 2023: Zach Perkins, Derek Hughes, Stewart Long, John Raymond and Mitchell Salvino
