Baseball Sweeps Marlins on Senior Day

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team celebrated Senior Day with a sweep against the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins, winning game one, 5-3, and then following it up with a 5-1 night cap victory.
The Generals (18-15, 11-11 ODAC) trailed early in game one but managed to keep Virginia Wesleyan (5-30-1) scoreless for six straight innings to secure a win in the opener and was the first to score in game two.

In the opening game, the majority of the Generals' runs came from the third and the fifth with two a piece. After a third-inning one-out double by senior center fielder Mitchell Salvino (
Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) and a walk by senior left fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison). Sophomore catcher Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va./Centreville) hit a two-RBI single to push the Blue and White ahead.
Two innings later the Generals returned for another pair of runs to extend their lead. Junior catcher Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va./John Champe) and senior designated hitter John Raymond (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) ended the inning with run-scoring knocks. Keuhner singled through the left side to score Jacob Jackson (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) and came home thanks to a double to left center by Raymond.
The Marlins mustered up a ninth-inning rally in game one. Creeping back within two runs, the Marlins loaded the bases to get just one single away from tying the game. Sophomore pitcher Andrew Flood (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset Secondary School) (S, 2) pitched in and out of trouble and forced a groundout to end the game and earn a save.
In the second nine, Salvino opened the game in style with a lead-off homer to left field. Raymond scored the second run in the first inning after a sacrifice fly in foul territory, hit by junior first baseman Drew Larsen (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run). W&L put up one more run in each of the second, third, and eighth inning. Perkins and Salvino celebrated their last home game of the season with an RBI double each to score the final two runs for the game.
Every senior played a major role in the sweep for W&L. Salvino ended the day going 4-for-9, scoring three times and driving in two runs. Perkins reached base twice on the day, including the RBI double, scored once, and in the field, he recorded four putouts. Raymond went 2-for-2 with a run batted in, in game one. Senior pitcher Stewart Long (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) came in for two innings of shutout relief pitching, striking out two in the process. Senior pitcher Derek Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) closed out the final inning without allowing any runs and completed the sweep on the Marlins.
Sophomore pitcher John Benner (McLean, Va./St. Albans) (6-4) earned the game one win on five hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher Evan Blair (Vienna, Va./James Madison) (3-0) received the game-two win after a six-inning performance. Blair allowed just one run on six hits and struck out seven.
First-year pitcher Nick Beatty (0-7) was the losing pitcher of game one allowing four runs in four innings. Senior pitcher Cam Nolet (1-7) received the loss in game two after a seven-inning performance allowing four runs on nine hits.
The program would like to thank and recognize Zach Perkins, Derek Hughes, Stewart Long, John Raymond, and Mitchell Salvino for their dedication and contributions to the W&L baseball program throughout their careers.
The Generals will be back in action next weekend for a best-of-three series in the ODAC Opening Series, the opponent and game time are to be determined.
