LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback on Sunday against 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins at the W&L Upper Courts.
In the top singles position, sophomore
Evan Erb (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) faced off against Thomas Yu, who is currently the sixth-ranked singles player in Division III and top-ranked competitor in the region. Erb claimed the first set, 6-2, before Yu forced a tiebreaker with a 6-4 win in the second set. Erb then secured his match, 10-7, in the final set.
The Generals' (6-3) other win came in doubles play. Sophomores
Will Kistler (Hilton Head, S.C. / Laurel Springs School) and
Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek) defeated Daniel Ardila and Joe DeMarco, 8-5, at No. 2.
Kistler pushed James Yu to three sets at No. 2 singles, but Yu prevailed by a final score of 3-6, 6-4, 12-10. The Yu brothers got all they could handle at the No. 1 doubles position from Erb and senior
Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade). The top doubles duo in the region and third-ranked pairing in Division III, the Yu's needed a 7-2 tiebreaker score to defeat Erb and Brady, 8-7.
The Blue Jays' (4-0) won at No. 3 doubles and were victorious the remaining five singles matches, all in straight sets.
