LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team fell by a score of 8-1 to eighth-ranked N.C. Wesleyan to kick off the Washburn Invitational on Friday at the Duchossois Tennis Center.
Sophomore
Evan Erb (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) posted the lone win for the Blue and White (6-2). He defeated Tshepo Mosarwa, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1 singles for the team point.
The Generals narrowly missed out on a point in doubles, as the duo of sophomore
James Kurani (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) and junior
Connor Coleman (Birmingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) took John Falke and Augusto Roca to a tiebreaker, before falling 8-7 (7-2) at No. 3.
In singles, three matches needed three sets to decide a winner. Senior
Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) (3) and sophomore
Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek) (4) each won their first sets by 6-3 scores. Brady then dropped the second and third sets, 6-3, 6-4, to Luca Knese, while Hirshberg surrendered scores of 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, to Roca.
The Generals will return in the Washburn Invitational on Sunday when they take on 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins at 10:00 am.
