Baseball Falls to Trinity (Conn.) in Monday Doubleheader

LEXINGTON, Va – The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped a pair of seven-inning non-conference games to Trinity College (Conn.) on Monday with scores of 4-3 and 13-2 in the nightcap.
The Generals (11-6) had a promising start in game one with a three-run first inning. The first three batters reached safely to load the bases with no outs. Junior shortstop Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) and sophomore catcher Jon Torre (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) put the ball in play to score one run each for the 2-0 lead. Junior second baseman Zach Senders (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) and first-year third baseman Nick Lagges (Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) quickly followed up with a pair of singles of their own to stretch the lead to three.

The Blue and White held the advantage on the scoreboard until the sixth inning but were unable to put any more runs on the board for the rest of game one.

Sophomore pitcher Matt Fleming (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started on the mound for the Generals in game one, he managed three shutout innings and totaled four punchouts in the outing and allowed just two runs in the process.
The Bantams (5-3) put up two runs in both the fourth and sixth inning to close out game one. Junior left fielder William Frain put the first run on the board for Trinity with an RBI single followed by a sac fly to bring the Bantams one run away. Patrick Dillon led off the sixth with a single to get the Bantams' rally started; coupled with a walk and some heads-up baserunning, Trinity managed to take the lead off a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Yoshi Omi-Jarrett.

Sophomore Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va./Centreville) (1-1) received the game-one loss, he allowed two runs in two innings pitched.
Junior pitcher Tyler Griffin (1-0) received the game-one win after taking over in the second inning. Griffin took over immediately after the three-run opening frame for W&L; he finished with four innings pitched and limited the Generals to three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, the offensive hot start was flamed out and the Generals were unable to light up the bottom of the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Trinity used its game-one momentum and got to work early. TC accumulated six runs in the first two innings and held onto their lead for the remainder of the night. The hot start forced the Blue and White to work to form a rally down 8-0 in the fifth but could only muster two runs in the process.
Trinity pitcher Kody Perry (2-0) earned the game-two win after a five-inning performance and allowed two runs on three hits with a strikeout and two walks. First-year pitcher Brody Pasieka (Cream Ridge, N.J./Hun School of Princeton) (0-1) was the Generals' pitcher of record for the nightcap.
Lagges led the Generals at the plate after a 3-for-3 performance in game one and added an RBI in game two. Junior second baseman Jacob Jackson (Norfolk, Va./Maury) also had a multi-hit game, Jackson tallied two of the three Generals' hits in game two and once in the process.
W&L will continue their extended home stand this Wednesday with a rematch against ODAC opponent Eastern Mennonite University at 4:00 pm at Smith Field. W&L last faced EMU on March 15th and won by a score of 11-4.
