Lagges Goes Yard Twice; Generals Best EMU 12-2

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team best visiting Eastern Mennonite in a conference matchup by a score of 12-2 on Wednesday night.

First-year third baseman Nick Lagges (
Chicago, Ill./Lane Tech) homered twice and junior designated hitter Jack Belbot (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) had one of his own that pushed the Generals (12-6, 6-2 ODAC) toward the win over the Royals (5-15, 1-5 ODAC).

Sophomore pitcher Jimmy Horvath (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) (1-1) started on the mound for the Generals and earned the win. While Horvath received plenty of run support, he also did his part and held the Royals to just one run in five innings, striking out three.
A four-run first inning by W&L paved the way for a big offensive game; a leadoff single by senior left fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison), followed by an RBI triple by junior second baseman Jacob Jackson (Norfolk, Va./Maury), put the Generals on the board. With runners on first and third, Belbot hit a no-doubter deep over the high wall in right field to give the home team a 4-0 lead out of the first.
The Blue and White led off the bottom of the third with back-to-back singles by junior first baseman Drew Larsen (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) and Belbot. A well-placed sacrifice bunt by junior shortstop Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) scored Larsen and pushed Belbot into scoring position. Lagges stepped up to the plate and cranked his first homer of the evening well over the left field wall to bust the game open, 7-0.
EMU attempted a fifth-inning rally and loaded the bases. The Royals managed just one run in the inning after an RBI walk by Nick Arnold. EMU would score their second and final run of the game with a seventh-inning sacrifice fly by Ethan Spraker. Andrew Flood (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset Secondary School) then came in to relieve Horvath, the sophomore worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam and held the Royals to one run to escape the top of the fifth with limited damage.
The Generals responded by putting up a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth. A fifth-inning two-run bomb by Lagges removed any previous damage done by the Royals. Larsen scored the Generals' final run of the evening with an RBI double down the left field line that brought sophomore catcher Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va./Centreville) home.
W&L finished with 18 hits on the day and seven Generals posted multi-hit performances. Jackson, Belbot, and Lagges all ended the game with three hits, Belbot and Lagges added four runs batted in each. Jackson finished 3-for-5 with a triple and Belbot went 3-for-4 with a homer, both with a pair of singles to add. Lagges reached base in each of his at-bats on two homers, a single, a walk, and a hit by pitch.
Royals pitcher, Alex Riles (0-6) received the loss after pitching 2.1 innings and gave up seven runs on eight hits and one walk. For the Blue and White, Flood and sophomore Evan Blair (Vienna, Va./James Madison) closed out the game for the home the pair combined for 2.2 innings pitched and face the minimum of eight batters, with four strikeouts.
The Generals return home this Sunday for a doubleheader against Lynchburg. First pitch for game one is slated for noon.
